Best Haunted
House
First Place Tie:
Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Spooky Walk
2 Chet Swezey Rd., Center Moriches.
631-878-1070. spookywalk.com
Not everyone is a fan of being frightened by creep
ghosts and ghouls. But when it’s for a good cause
then the response should be an enthusiastic:
“Why not?” The Spooky Walk has earned the
adulation of Long Islanders for not only its
ability to scare the bejesus out of its guests, but
for its kind-hearted support of children and
adults with special needs. The Spooky Walk is
a fundraiser held each October to benefit Camp
Pa-Qua-Tuck—a special needs camp. For nearly
three decades, the Spooky Walk has become
a staple in the community, challenging even
the bravest adults to maintain their wits. Not
only do 100-percent of the proceeds go toward
supporting the special needs camp, but members
of the community are invited to volunteer by
helping build and run exhibits. Bloody well done,
Spooky Walk!
Best Haunted

First Place Tie:
Joe Allocco’s Franklin
Square Horror
1148 Norbay St., Franklin Square.

joea65.wix.com/franklin-square-horror
For the third year in a row, Joe Allocco’s Franklin
Square Horror has claimed the prized crown of
Best Haunted House on Long Island. Sure, this
especially creepy haunted house is sharing the
prize this year, but that does not change the fact
that Allocco’s has established itself as the go-to
place for a devilishly frightful time with friends
and family, year after year. Creativity abounds at
this haunted house, featuring chainsaw-wielding
menaces, flesh-eating zombies, and all sorts of
unpleasant maniacs. While you’re there, don’t
miss out on the House of VooDoo—just thinking
about it gives us the creeps—and the always hairraising
Haunted Funeral Home. You’re in for a
fright, that’s for sure!
Best Ice Skating
Rink
Superior Ice Rink
270 Indian Head Rd., Kings Park.
631-269-3900. superioricerink.com
Ice, ice, baby! Ice skating with friends and family
will never get old—and neither will Superior
Ice Rink in Kings Park. The rink first opened
its doors in 1972. Ever since, it has become a
favorite of ice skaters around the Island who
jump at the chance—or in this case, Triple
Lutz—to enjoy a few hours inside a public skating
rink. Aside from year-round public sessions,
the facility also hosts various hockey leagues,
including summer camps and tot-hockey, as
well as group and private skating instruction
for all ages. And for those parents interested in
hosting a birthday bash, Superior Ice Rink plays
host to unforgettable parties, too! What better
way to celebrate your child’s big day than by
crisscrossing around the rink!
Best Indoor
Tennis Facility
Sportime
Multiple Locations. 888-NYTENNIS.
sportimeny.com
Otherwise known as “Tennis Heaven,” Sportime
is the tennis facility where Long Islanders go to
master their forehand and backhand and those
always-frustrating net shots. Sportime offers LI
tennis players across the region a comfortable
place to work on their game while enjoying the
pleasures of chasing and smacking a tennis
ball with grit and determination—yes, just like
Serena! As an added bonus, Sportime employs
its own tennis pros, who beginner players can
call upon to help improve certain aspects of their
game. Even the best players have coaches. But do
they have a Sportime? We do. And for that, Long
Islanders are eternally grateful!
Best Islander
John Tavares
1255 Hempstead Tpke., Uniondale.
516-794-9300. islanders.nhl.com
Yep, the Islanders are still in Brooklyn. For local
fans, there move west remains, perhaps forever
so, a sore subject. Indeed, there’s no place like
home—and for the Islanders, home is Long
Island. But there is good news, in the name of
John Tavares. The 26-year-old continues to
display remarkable poise, and an innate ability
to find the back of the net or a teammate gliding
toward the goal. Tavares, who amazingly is
already in his eighth season with the team, has
surpassed the 500-point mark for his career,
with the majority coming on assists. The Ontario
native remains the heartbeat of the team. In last
year’s playoff run, Tavares displayed an appetite
for performing in big moments, scoring six goals
and collecting five assists in 11 games. Thanks to
his leadership and prowess on the ice, Tavares
remains LI’s pick as the Best Islander!
Best Islander -
All-time
Mike Bosy
1255 Hempstead Tpke., Uniondale.
516-794-9300. islanders.nhl.com
Mike Bossy is a living legend. The sharpshooting
Islander from the franchises’ glory
days continues to outshine his brethren in this
competition. Let’s review his accomplishments:
Bossy is a Hall of Famer who played a key role in
helping the Islanders win four straight Stanley
Cup Championships from 1973-1989. Over the
course of 10 seasons with the Isles, Bossy was
selected to seven All-Star games, accumulated
more than 550 goals and assists, and he twice
led the league in scoring, while also finishing
top-five in game-winning goals six times during
his career. Wow. Bossy’s clutch trait earned him
the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable
player in the 1981-82 Stanley Cup Playoffs. What
a player!
Best Long Island
Duck
Lew Ford
3 Court House Dr., Central Islip.
631-940-3825. liducks.com
Since joining the Long Island Ducks, Lew Ford
emerged as the team’s most prolific batter. Over
the last several seasons Ford has taken on the
responsibilities of hitting coach—allowing him
to pass along his knowledge of the game to his
teammates, of whom many are striving to earn
their way to the Big Leagues. Ford first joined
the club in 2009 and quickly became a favorite
among the Ducks’ rabid fan base. Ford, who was
drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 1999, played six
seasons in Major League Baseball. He spent his
first five season with the Minnesota Twins, with
his best year coming in 2004. Maybe one day
he’ll return to the majors, perhaps this time as a
hitting coach. In the meantime, Long Islanders
say he’s the Best Long Island Duck!
