The Netflix Graveyard:
Mourning four Netflix
favorites that got the boot
BY MEAGHAN MCGOLDRICK
Show: “Marco
Polo”
Cancelled after: Two seasons
Audience rating: 8/10
Netflix canned this series -- focused on the
famous 13th century merchant and explorer
-- quite abruptly. The show, which launched
in 2014, was the first Netflix original series
developed in the U.S. for global market and,
despite high ratings, was quick to see the
door.
Popular streaming service Netflix appeared
to be on a rampage this summer when
it abruptly cancelled a handful of its
seemingly more popular shows (the cries
after the service cancelled science-fiction
series “Sense8” could be heard around
the world).
To remember them properly (and maybe let
you know if you haven’t yet heard the news),
we’ve compiled a shortlist of just some of the
Netflix original series the service has bid adieu
to over the last few years.
Show:
“Longmire”
Cancelled after: Six seasons
(three of them on Netflix)
Audience rating: 9.2/10
This contemporary crime
thriller -- which revolved around
a Wyoming sheriff rebuilding his
life and career after the death
of his wife -- was canned by the
streaming service, despite its
nearly perfect audience rating.
Show: “Sense8”
Cancelled after: Two seasons
Audience rating: 8.2/10
This show from the creators of “The Matrix” and “Babylon 5” told
the story of eight strangers who could telepathically experience each
other’s lives. The sci-fi show was an instant cult classic, though, quite
unexpectedly, was given the boot this summer.
However, after seeing the backlash the cancellation inspired,
Netflix officials have announced a forthcoming finale movie for the
series which will wrap up loose ends and give diehards some closure
-- coming to Netflix sometime in the near future.
Show: “The Get
Down”
Cancelled after: One season
Audience Rating: 7.8/10
Another show that was seemingly doing well for
the streaming service, “The Get Down” centered in
on 1977 New York City and the talented and soulful
youth of the South Bronx that called it home. With
the show joining “Sense8” in an early grave, fans
won’t necessarily get to see those kids live out
their dreams.
