How to save
the mov ieg oing

BY JAIME DEJESUS It’s not a new observation that movie theaters
may be an endangered species. With online
streaming, continued success of video games,
high quality televisions becoming cheaper, the
golden age of TV, and the cost of going to the
local cinema, consumers have a lot of options
on how they receive their entertainment.
Piracy also continues to be a growing issue. This
year’s box offi ce take thus far, as in recent years,
has been a mixed bag. But it’s been weak enough
that some people start talking gloom and doom
when they describe the future.
It’s not that theaters and big movie studios
haven’t tried to enhance the experience. Theaters
are adding luxury seating and dining options.
They tried adding 3D to movies, but unless your
movie was called “Avatar” or “Gravity,” viewers
didn’t fi nd technology enhanced the movie-going
experience enough to make it worth the added
cost.
Here are some ways, in my humble opinion, that
the movie industry can capitalize on its strengths.
