Low budget movies
can be awesome and
the demand is there
Creative risks are an admitted rarity in
Hollywood. But there are many low risk fi lms that
pay off big time both fi nancially and in terms of
quality. There’s no better example of this than “Get
Out.”
Horror movies usually stink these days. However,
this one is a social commentary on race that also
plays as an incredibly creepy and ingenious idea.
It was also one of the best reviewed fi lms this year,
creating great buzz and word of mouth.
Director Jordan Peele, known for his comedy
background, really created something special with
a production budget under $5 million. That means
a huge profi t as the movie generated over $175
million. The low risk (fi nancially speaking), high
reward fi lm needs to be taken more seriously. It
off ers something new and proves people will go to
the movies for a spectacle such as this. Ideas sell!
Then, there’s “Split.” M. Night Shyamalan was
pegged to be the next Steven Spielberg after
beloved movies such as “The Sixth Sense” and
“Unbreakable.” Then, he released some fi lms that
audiences didn’t care for.
But he went back to his roots, releasing a thriller
that doesn’t give the suspense away in the trailers.
Without giving too much away, James McAvoy
gives an award-winning performance as he plays
several personalities. The fi lm cost under $10
million and made $276 million worldwide, with
sequels in the works.
In addition, comedies are typically cheap to
make and more of these need to be released.
That includes animated fi lms that are suitable for
families of all ages.
