Not: Sci Fi Movies
Netflix has a wide variety of Sci-Fi tv shows
and movies, but they’re very hit or miss. They
seem to bounce from successful (Spectral) to
flop (Bright), back to hit shows (Altered Carbon,
Lost in Space) and back again to bad movies
(Anon, The Titan). At this point, the sci-fi content
on Netflix is so unpredictable that it’s safer to
stay away.
Hot: Stand-Up
Comedy
When it comes to stand-up,
Netflix is the best in the business.
Classic comics Chris Rock, Dave
Chappelle and Jerry Seinfeld have
all done Netflix specials in the past
year. Young comedians are having
their work showcased in “The Comedy
Lineup” and “The Standups.” John
Mulaney recently won an Emmy for
his Netflix special “Kid Gorgeous.”
Almost any comedian you’re looking for
has a special with Netflix - even Ellen
DeGeneres has one coming soon. Netflix
is the industry leader in stand-up comedy,
and no one else even comes close.
Not: Talk Shows
You have to give Netflix credit for persistence
with talk shows, but after Chelsea
Handler, Joel McHale and Michelle Wolf’s
shows were all cancelled, it’s a wonder
why they keep trying. David Letterman
was given a show with some big fish, but
after the excitement surrounding Barack
Obama’s episode died down, the show
fizzled. Norm MacDonald has a new show
coming this fall, but it’s beginning to look
like Netflix and talk shows just don’t mix.
Hot: Crime Movies
The days of scrolling through the Netflix movie
catalog and groaning about the lack of good
films are over. Here’s just a taste: Heat, Seven,
Scarface, L.A. Confidential, Bad Boys. Netflix
has quietly compiled a fantastic lineup of crime
movies, perfect for procrastinating or screening
away the weekend.
