qns.com 14 SPRING 2016 BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE This is DC’s best shot at competing with the massive popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They took two of comic’s most popular characters and put them in a film that fans have been asking for, for decades. 2016 seems like the year to pit our favorite heroes against each other. The average movie goer might not even know why Batman and Superman would fight and how Bats would even stand a chance. None of that matters. ‘The Battle of the Century’ is upon us. Although there hasn’t been the most positive buzz around the movie, it’s sure to rake in the dough at the box office. Director Zack Snyder divided audiences with his portrayal of Superman in 2013’s “Man of Steel” and he’s back again, so perhaps his polarizing depiction of Supes could be the root of the fear for fans this time around. If the film stumbles, it’s either due to his style or Warner simply trying to put too many characters into one movie. One concern has been put to rest: Ben Affleck appears to be one of the best portrayers of Batman on film based on clips, trailers and reports from people that have seen the film early. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is also sure to be a nice addition. This movie has a lot riding for it as BVS is supposed to be the build-up to several DC superhero films and eventually lead to “Justice League.” So, it’s no wonder fans and critics are dissecting everything about this movie. Expect the movie to reach levels of greatness for fans, but also divide them over Snyder’s portrayal, especially of Superman. But it will be a hit. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Marvel Studios can do no wrong. Although “Avengers: Age of Ultron” wasn’t the massive hit the first film was, it still moved the story forward and was generally liked by audiences. What makes the company more impressive is that it has been producing hits based on its more obscure lineup of characters, like “Guardians of the Galaxy” and even “Ant- Man.” Now the big guns are out. The first “Captain America” was a modest hit, but the sequel was considered one of Marvel’s best, as it took the spy genre and mixed it with the characters’ superhero elements. Now the same directors, the Russo brothers, are back and dealing with a lot more characters. Like “Batman v Superman,” fans have been waiting to see the comic’s most popular story line, Civil War, on film, with allegiances pledged between two teams of superheroes over their role within U.S. government. Although fans should expect this take to be different from the comics to make sense for the movies, it does realize very great possibilities and pin Marvel’s most popular character against Cappy, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. It’s going to be a nasty battle for the on-again, offagain friendship.  And we get the introduction of the Black Panther, and yes, Marvel Studio’s take on the hero that started all the popularity of comics on film this cycle, Spider-Man. Basically this is less a Captain America movie than it is an Avengers one, minus Hulk and Thor. Sure, it will center around Steve Rogers and his turmoil within the story, but the directors have a lot of characters to fit in the movie. It seems like a tougher task than over at DC. But if anyone is game to make it work and make it great, it’s Marvel.  THE CONJURING 2 It’s great when moviegoers and critics alike find a solid horror film they collectively enjoy. Lately, there have been many more misses than hits for the genre. Why? Maybe it’s that we’ve seen it all and have been desensitized with what is considered scary, or filmmakers’ reliance on the popular, but tired ‘found footage’ technique or jump scares or gore. Either way, in 2013 “The Conjuring” came along and finally delivered on a scary premise with potential for plenty of sequels. Similar to “The Exorcist” (the original), the film centers on paranormal investigators in 1970 who try to help a family which is dealing with supernatural activity after moving into a farmhouse. If you haven’t seen it yet, go now.  The film made $318 million on a small budget and released a laughable spinoff. But this movie is the true sequel and a continuation of the story that made fans happy to be scared at movies again. Little is known about the plot for the second film, but here’s hoping lightning strikes twice. Courtesy of Warner Bros Courtesy of marvel.com Courtesy of Warner Bros most anticipated movies of 2016
