BEST YOUTUBE CHANNELS forGAMERS BY JAIME DEJESUS It’s a strange time for gaming journalism. As more software than ever has burst onto the scene and hardware is selling at a rapid pace, it’s strange that once-established sources of information have folded. A few years ago, Nintendo World ended a run that started in the eighties. Recently a popular gaming site, GameTrailers ended its 14-year run. Why is this happening and where are gamers getting their news? Although there are still giants in the industry such as IGN and Gamespot that will likely stay around for a while, a lot of gamers are finding new and unique ways to find their news with other fans providing the info. In fact, with the emergence of YouTube channels and game streaming site, Twitch, gamers are becoming personalities with their own shows. Some quality is better than others, but the variety is vast. These channels can also discuss a game candidly and from a different perspective without worrying about the professional ramifications. There is something for every gamer, from collectors to retro to current. Here are a just a few of many channels that have found success. Kinda Funny Games youtube.com/kindafunnygames Four gaming and entertainment journalists quit their successful jobs at IGN to make their side project, Kinda Funny, a full-time commitment. Through their Patreon account that allows fans to donate as much as they want with the promise of various perks, these gentlemen -- Greg Miller, Colin Moriarty, Tim Gettys and Nick Scarpino – may have revolutionized the way gamers get their news. Not only are they producing a YouTube channel, but a podcast, a Twitch account and a cartoon series. These guys took a huge risk but a popular one that seems to be paying off. Why is it so successful? Because they’re fun to listen to. They have distinct personalities and share great chemistry. You get to know their loves and you want to try it out too. If gaming journalism is to survive, this is the template. They also take topics and questions from fans that aren’t gaming-related and offer their mostly interesting opinions at length. Of course, it takes a special group and dedication for this to work. But this a great place to start if you want a new way to discuss games. Kinda Funny Games Courtesy of Youtube
