Happy Console Gamer youtube.com/happyconsolegamer This channel proves that you don’t need a job in gaming journalism to form a successful channel and a hardcore fan base. Host Johnny Millennium decided to take an angle and talk about games in a positive light. There are too many foul-mouthed channels that trash bad games, and for the most part, they deserve it. But the rants often feel fake and get tiresome for the viewer. What Millennium has done, along with best friend and co-host Rob-Man, is to take a different angle and rely on nostalgia and their personal passion and friendship to carry each episode. You really do start to share in their stories. Mostly concentrating on gaming in the late eighties and early nineties, you can tell that it’s about more than just games for these two. It’s reminiscing about the first time you bought a Nintendo, or ran to the local grocery store to pick up the latest gaming mag (pre-internet) or hung out in arcades that attracted troublemakers. It’s also about how one can take gaming too far. In all, what makes this channel my personal favorite is its honesty and raw feel to it. These people are like you and will make you feel like you’re anticipating the can’t-miss system. It’s so diverse. Subscribe and realize that gaming can take us back and connect us, rather than alienate. Gaming Historian youtube.com/gaminghistorian This channel is excellent for those who always wanted to watch mini-documentaries on all things gaming. Want to learn more about the awful Nintendo accessory, the Power Glove? There’s an episode dedicated to it. Or the fall of Sega’s hardware department? This channel is for the ‘gaming thinker.’ The likable historian narrates each episode in a professional manner and if you need some background on any given topic, this channel probably has it. My personal favorite was the historian’s extensive and touching doc on the late Satura Iwata, president of Nintendo. Jeremy Jahns youtube.com/jeremyjahns Jeremy Jahns specializes in movie reviews. Most younger people reference him when they discuss what reviewers they trust the most. With RottenTomatoes, lots of reviewers get lost in the shuffle. Johns took it upon himself to become a very charming and funny personality that can tell you what he thinks of a film, good, bad, and ugly. It’s all discussed in a fast-paced format that’s not annoying or unfair like most review sites. Rather, he’s insightful and funny and he makes the film the star of each episode, which is not an easy feat. Anyway, he reviews games as well, although not as much. He reviews in such a cutting edge way that Jahns must be mentioned because, again, this is the future. Don’t believe me? Ask his one million subscribers. Angry Video Game Nerd youtube.com/cinemassacre James Rolfe started his channel earlier than most. He found his niche early and stood by it. Rolfe plays a foul mouth ‘nerd’ who, in each episode, replays games that tormented him most of his childhood either because of the insane level of difficulty or the awful quality. His rants have been recreated by many, but none have pulled it off as seamlessly as the nerd. You feel his frustrations because all of us have used our allowance money to buy a $60 game only to find out it’s garbage. Rolfe stands apart from most because he’s clever in filmmaking and editing. He knows what video game nerds get annoyed about. His nearly two million subscribers have also helped him fund an indie movie that was played in theaters and released on Blu-ray. Say what you want about the nerd, but he was an inspiration for many gaming personalities and deserves respect.
