Save a map to
your phone
and keep one
on you.
Some campuses are
small, but some college
campuses are massive. You
may think you know the lay
of the land, but you never
know where a new class or
a long walk to some good
music might take you. It’s
always good to have a point
of reference handy. And
double up. Phones do die,
remember?
Keep a list of
emergency
contacts.
We’re not just talking
your mom and dad.
Keep a list of important
campus phone numbers
(and emails – you never
know), like your school’s
security office, on-campus
dorming homebases and
head honchos or even a
professor you really, really
trust. It’s always good to
have somebody to call if
something goes wrong.
Five quick tips
to staying safe
on campus
Share your
location with
someone.
Now, we’re not saying
to let grandma know
whenever you’re out on
the town, but just about
anyone with an iPhone can
share his or her location
with somebody. And you
can turn it off! If you’re
going out on the town to
somewhere new, or know
you’ll be walking home
late from class, share your
location with a friend (or
better yet, your roommate)
so that if something goes
awry, there’s a better
chance of someone
knowing.
Be aware of
where you are.
We’re not just talking
on-campus. Familiarize
yourself with the city
you’re in’s layout and –
though it’s scary to think
about – its crime. And, of
course, always be aware
of your surroundings. Put
the phone down while
you’re walking and always
try to listen to music with
one headphone if you’re
somewhere unfamiliar.
Keep your eyes open
and your mind on your
surroundings.
Know the exits
and the safety
protocols.
This goes for every
classroom, every residence
hall and every rec center.
Know the exits and know
the plan in case something
real goes down.
BY MEAGHAN MCGOLDRICK Tensions have been high lately, politically, socially
and in pretty much every setting (no family
dinner is safe from touchy subjects). But in all
seriousness, it’s important to stay safe on campus
and, thankfully, with the shifting social climate,
most schools have buckled down and done even
more to make their students feel at ease.
Here are some things you can do every day to keep
yourself a little safer on campus.
