Summer of Service
With the school year coming to an end, your time is — at long
last — your own, for a couple of months, at least.
You probably have plenty of plans for maximizing your fun
quotient during the academic hiatus. You can head to the
beach, stopping maybe to grab a tube of sunscreen and a
towel, or to the movies to see the latest blockbuster, or hit the
road in search of adventure.
Or, you can do all that, and also make some time to make a
difference.
Maybe you love working with kids — why not volunteer with
an organization that works with inner city children at study or
at play?
If you think you might want to be a doctor down the road,
your local medical center will likely welcome you as a volunteer.
You’ll help out where your help is needed, and also get an
inkling as to whether the medical profession is something you
really want to pursue.
If politics is your passion, you can put in some hours working
on the campaign of a candidate you admire. In New York,
elections for state offices will be held in 2018, and candidates
are running for both statewide office (governor, lieutenant
governor, attorney general and comptroller) and for posts as
local representatives (assemblymembers and state senators).
Read up on the candidates, evaluate their positions, then
reach out to one whose platform appeals to you. You’ll get
valuable, real-world experience in the often-overlooked realm
of civics, make connections that could help you down the road,
and also, just maybe, help jumpstart the kind of change you
want to see.
And, if you think you’re too young to really have an impact,
think again!
With the epidemic of gun violence that has erupted around
the country, high school students are making their voices
heard, from the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High
School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people died earlier this
year in a barrage of bullets, to right here in New York, where
student-led protests drawing attention to the scourge of gun
violence have made headlines.
These students, to their credit, are living the maxim, “Be the
change you want to see in the world.”
If they can do it, you can, too.
