HOW TO SAVE ON TECH GEAR FOR COLLEGE QNS.com 26 SUMMER 2016 Affordable laptop If you want a top-of-the-line laptop that allows you to edit films and audio, and will work in synergy with your smartphone, like a MacBook Pro, and can swing in, then go for it. However, if you just want something barebones that can browse the Internet, stream videos from YouTube, and write term papers, you should highly consider lower end PC laptops. HP, Gateway and others can be had just for a couple of hundred bucks, a fraction of the cost of a higher end system with features that you might not need. Plus, many of them are lightweight, making it easier to lug around. If space is an issue, there are alternatives. It’s possible a less expensive laptop won’t last as long as a laptop that costs one grand, but you don’t have to worry about hurting the wallet. External Hard drive This is probably a student’s best friend. Even if you have the best PC or Mac, you can never have enough storage, and there’s always the worry that it will crash and obliterate important data. For an affordable price, you could buy portable or larger hard drives that offer tons of memory. This will allow you to save your computer the labor of saving far too many photos, projects or songs. And if you get a cheaper model computer with limited storage, here’s your solution. If you can swing it, buy a couple. Flash drives, which hold less, are also imperative, especially if you take your work to the campus library. They’ve all gotten cheaper with time, so take advantage. Digital Cameras Smartphones are getting better and better for taking photos. They also offer the convenience of automatically sharing your pix via text messages and social media. But there’s something that feels right about owning a dedicated digital camera. And they’re cheaper – because they have to stay competitive with smartphones -- which is great for the consumer. A college student will always need a camera, whether it’s for recreation or assignments. Many basic point-and-shoot ones fit in the smallest of pockets and most of the time, the quality of photo is superior. Make sure you stock up on plenty of SD cards while you’re at it.
