THE BIG SICK
BEST COMEDY, BEST ROMANCE, TOP 4
Whenever film critics look for films to look forward to during the upcoming
year, a gem inevitably flies under the radar.
“The Big Sick” is a prime example of that. In a world where superhero films
(mostly high quality ones) dominate the box office and viewers’ attention, it’s
a joy to see a movie that is as authentic, funny and emotional as this one.
I went into this movie knowing very little about the plot and I highly
recommend you do the same. There were tons of surprises throughout the
film, most of them very touching moments. I expected to laugh and I did. I
learned a lot about the character, who is Pakistani and is being forced by his
family into a pre-arranged marriage. If he doesn’t go through with it, they will
disown him.
You sympathize for the character who is a comedian that has fallen in love
with an American woman. A lot happens in between but you feel the conflict
rather than blaming any one person.
Kumail Nanjiani wrote and starred in a movie that is very much based on his
life and it’s not an easy task to pull off. He does it seamlessly. His character
isn’t perfect, but viewers will grow fond of him regardless.
Another scene stealer is Ray Romano. We’ve seen him branch out when he
starred in the superb drama “Parenthood” and here he extends his range even
Baby Driver
Best Action
I’m not a huge fan of movies about fast cars. “Fast and Furious” films are
fun at times because of the characters and love for family, but the latest and
great rides don’t do it for me. This is why I waited to see “Baby Driver” despite
the recommendations.
further. He’s funny and says inappropriate things, but there’s a warmth to him
that displays guilt, regret, and love for his daughter. He and Nanjiani together
are outstanding.
Hopefully, this film gets the recognition it should come award season.
Thankfully, the film didn’t disappoint.
There are plenty of really great breathtaking car chases, but it’s the style and
direction that makes this movie special. I thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack
which plays a pivotal role in this film, as do the large and talented cast.
The heart behind “Baby Driver” is what keeps its engine running.
