New Year, New Beginnings
It’s cold, maybe snowy, and when a storm rages, there’s little
impetus to leave your cozy cocoon, be it dorm room, off-campus
apartment or even the family home, for pretty much any reason.
But, winter -- no matter how you feel about the weather -- has
one thing going for it -- the New Year, and the new beginnings it
represents.
The idea of making New Year’s resolutions is believed to date back
thousands of years to the ancient Babylonians, and the Romans
saluted the transition between one year and the next through their
god Janus (after whom the month January is named), who looks
forward and backward at once.
We too look back at the year that has passed as we look forward
to the one that is just beginning, making promises to ourselves to
lose weight, get better grades or a better job, learn a new skill, find
a new significant other, exercise more or just generally be better
people. It’s a way of tying up loose ends, and moving forward with
life, despite whatever disappointments we may have encountered in
the year that’s just ended.
That the tradition has persisted for millennia says something
about how significant it is and how appealing the concept of starting
afresh is to the human psyche.
Particularly with the new semester being right around the corner.
And, we want to help with that -- check out this issue of Aspire
for tips on succeeding during your first year at college, as well as for
getting along with a roommate who you definitely would not have
chosen, till May comes and you can each go your own way.
And, if you want inspiration, turn to our story about a Brooklyn
Tech student (now graduate) who turned the difficulties he had
studying after experiencing a concussion into a new app that helped
him ace the ACT, and which is now helping students worldwide
improve their grades on standardized tests.
If you’re looking for fashions to brighten the dark winter days,
browse our feature on the latest cold-weather looks sweeping
campuses and city streets.
And, if it’s entertainment you’re after, be sure to check out our
guide to the best shows to stream, or dive into our look at state-ofthe
art gaming and our recap of the movies that reverberated most
dramatically with viewers in recent months.
They’re all likely to be available to stream soon, if they’re not
already -- making them perfect for those days that you just don’t
want to brave the elements, and just can’t bring yourself to crack
the books.
