spreading the love APRIL 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 45 In recent years, restaurateurs have heralded Astoria as a both a vital testing ground and successful launching pad for restaurant concepts before transferring them into Manhattan. Taverna Kyclades, Rizzos Fine Pizza, and Brooklyn Bagel are just a trio of hit examples. There’s also the Bareburger enterprise, which became a mega success in Astoria and is now enjoyed across the globe. One of the most recent labors of love to make the leap into Manhattan is Il Bambino, Astoria’s beloved paninoteca, tapas eatery and wine bar. The popular sandwich spot born eight years ago on 31st Avenue recently opened the doors of its second location in Greenwich Village. “Our goal has always remained the same since our inception—to source the best quality ingredients and marry them together in such a way that it creates a one of a kind experience for our customers,” explains Darren Lawless. The newest incarnation, located at 48 West 8th Street, offers many of the same favorites enjoyed in the Astoria location. Fresh artisan cheeses, imported charcuterie, inventive salads, antipasti and crostini still shine brightly in the new setting. Fingerling potatoes tossed in truffle aioli and topped with crisp shallots and pecorino offer the perfect start. A Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Mimosa of baby arugula sprinkled with shaved egg and a zesty bacon vinaigrette provides a delightful salad to follow. But as always, the real fun comes from building crostini PuPu Platters or ordering by the pair, with toppings like truffled egg salad and speck or chorizo with apricot butter and goat cheese, while the array of panini provide a heartier fare. If you are visiting the city, there’s no need to rush and eat at home before you leave. You can always enjoy a glass of wine and a savory square here in Astoria, just like before. www.ilbambinonyc.com 34-08 31st Ave, Queens, NY 11106 48 W 8th St, New York, NY 10011 FOOD & DRINK Story by Bradley Hawks
