14 JANUARY 6 - JANUARY 12, 2017 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP "Medcast Plus" to discuss colon cancer in new episode BY JAIME DEJESUS [email protected] “Medcast Plus,” a new television program aimed at informing Brooklynites about various health issues, with doctors as featured guests, is returning with its second episode, focusing on colon cancer. “It was a great experience and very rewarding to be on the show,” said guest Doctor Sofya Pintova, an assistant professor in the department of medicine, Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Mount Sinai Hospital. “I’m hoping it will bring awareness to colon cancer and other cancer issues. If this episode can change even one person's mind to get a colonoscopy, it would be a huge success.” This episode focused on different aspects of colon cancer. "The show dealt with what to expect if people are diagnosed with colon cancer,” she said. “If it’s detected early, it’s highly curable. We even discussed how stage four can be cured nowadays.” After her first experience appearing on “Medcast Plus,” Pintova found the show to be extremely important. “I think bringing awareness about important health related issues especially to the local community hopefully highlights these issues and makes people better educated and more aware of what they can do, especially preventive things,” she said. Helen Vays, the host of the second episode and future episodes, agreed. “We are trying to educate the community,” she said. "It’s a self-education and a great way to increase disease awareness and encourage preventive help. We want to prevent viewers getting cancer. "We discuss how early symptoms can come and some of the common symptoms," she went on, "and what is a common age to get a colonoscopy. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer." Vays, the director at City Drugs, was impressed with Pintova. “She’s so innovative and passionate and was great to talk to. She’s extremely knowledgeable,” she said. Vays' first crack at hosting a show was also a positive experience. “I loved it,” she said. “This is the first one of many that I’ll be hosting. Hopefully, people will get more involved with the show and topics. We will have a different specialty show every week.” "Medcast Plus" is sponsored by City Drugs.
