The poorest Americans hold debts
in excess of 250 percent of their incomes
while the wealthiest hold debts
approximately 20 percent of their
income. Total household debt tops
$13 trillion. There is approximately
$1.5 trillion in student loan debt
outstanding.
Lack of economic growth and
increased debt have created a sense
of hopelessness for the working
class. Their frustration and anger
convinced them to try anything that
was different last November in the
hope that it would make a positive
difference. What we received is legislation

consumer protection and a tax bill
assuring the wealthy get wealthier.
The GOP tax bill gives permanent
income tax relief for corporations and
billionaires. The tax “relief” will swell
the federal debt and that federal debt
burden will fall most heavily on the
working class in the end.
Since 2008, total U.S. federal debt
has more than doubled. The federal
government has borrowed more money
in the last 10 years than it borrowed
in its 231 prior years of its existence.
What will voters do when they realize
what has happened? They are likely to
be more upset and ready for a change
than when they cast their vote for the
Donald.
It is time for another change in
Washington, D.C. If Americans want
fiscal balance, education for their
children, healthcare and fairness in
federal spending, they will need to
support Democrats in the midterm
elections in November.

Blasio is really not serious about
following through on his campaign
promises to assure the NYPD scrupulously honors
individual citizens civil rights.
He stated that the “new administration promised
change but instead we get more of the same.”
That is not true. The number of arrests for low-level
marijuana possession
has dropped and NYPD
policy is not to force a
suspect to display small
amounts of pot in order
to make an arrest.
Governor Cuomo has
proposed decriminalizing
possession of 15
grams or less of pot whether hidden or in plain view,
which would take this controversy and its attendant
political baggage off the table. It would be nice to let
police offi cers perform their duties instead of being
pawns in a political chess game.
Mayor de Blasio has fulfi lled an incredible amount
of his promises in a very short time. He has imposed
the extra protection of an inspector general for the
NYPD and signed off on the laws passed by the City
Council which may leave police offi cers subject to
lawsuits for negligent performance of their duties.
He has provided universal pre K without a tax
increase. He is settling the outstanding municipal
worker contracts neglected by Mike Bloomberg for
the next mayor to handle. He is championing Vision
Zero to reduce traffi c fatalities to zero. It is unfair
to question his commitment to his ideals or to the
fulfi llment of his promises.
The City Council will pass 11 laws and four resolutions
to create a Vision Zero environment for our
streets. The new laws provide a lower speed limit for
city streets and enhanced penalties for reckless drivers.
The state legislature must approve the changes.
We also need the state legislature to provide a
reasonable number of speed cameras to enforce the
new laws. Let us hope that our legislators will work
together as a group to see that these changes and
improvements are made quickly.

We are seeing more and more homes in Dyker
Heights enclosed in stainless steel bars on all
fl oors and heavy stainless steel security doors.
I fi nd this trend extremely disturbing. The community
remains as safe as ever. The new protections
seem to appear only on recently purchased
homes and refl ect a different cultural view on
security. Homes like this have existed in great
numbers in the Sunset Park area for many
years and are really not positive additions to
any community.
The homes themselves look horrible and,
worse yet, they make the whole area around
them appear trashy. And, frankly, instead of offering
additional security protection, they more
than likely attract unwanted attention from potential
burglars who fi gure these homes contain
the greatest number of valuables.
Community outreach by civic and government
groups as well as elected offi cials explaining
the disadvantages of the heavy security from
both an aesthetic as well as security perspective
is necessary, or we will be confronted with large
sections of our community looking like safety
deposit box holding cells.

REPRESENTATIVE
GOVERNMENT
An interesting quirk about laws
that citizens do not like is that
they always have the ability to
work through their representatives
to change them. This causes me to
wonder why Attorney General Jeff Sessions
has been faulted for enforcing a
federal law that criminalizes pot use.
Although I personally do not support
the legalization of recreational
pot use, if more and more Americans
do support such use, they should push
for a change in the law. The Congress
is the appropriate place for the debate
and as a representative body of the
people, the right place to make any
changes.
There is mounting evidence that the
Obama administration through executive
orders designed to get around
existing laws and by outright ignoring
current laws until a court forced it to
obey,managed the government in this
manner especially during his second
term.
That is not what I want from the
Trump administration. I expect all
cabinet level leaders to enforce the
laws that their agencies have been
tasked with overseeing. That is all Jeff
Sessions did. It is what I would expect.

Governor Cuomo did not come out
of last week’s State of the State Address
unscratched. The Senate majority
leader asked for all of the governor’s
economic development programs to
be independently audited to determine
whether they are providing the
taxpayers with the benefits originally
presented.
State Senator Marty Golden (whom
I serve as chief of staff) criticized
the governor for policies that have
resulted in a net migration of citizens
out of the state. And Assemblymember
Nicole Malliotakis took the governor
to task for the enormous cost to taxpayers
that would result if his State
of the State agenda were enacted. She
wondered out loud if he thought he
was using Bitcoin, Chuck E. Cheese or
Monopoly money to pay.
The governor in his eighth State
of the State went the farthest he has
ever ventured to take up a progressive
national mantel at the expense of New
Yorkers. Short fixes that become long
term failures give the governor a
quick hit on the national stage, but do
nothing for New Yorkers.
Cuomo needs to wake up and see
that he has little to no hope of becoming
a presidential candidate. He has
never played well on the national
Democratic stage and even less so
on the national presidential stage.
Trump with what is certain to be an
immensely popular tax cut in most of
the country would make easy work of
Cuomo in 40-plus states.
* * *
Apparently before Cuomo can worry
about November he will need to get
past a September Democratic primary.
Wealthy businessman Bill Samuels
has invested big in a committee that
is raising questions about Cuomo’s credentials
to progressive New Yorkers
who are mostly registered Democrats.
Several individuals have shown an
interest in a challenge. I would expect
the mayor, albeit behind the scenes,
also to weigh in.
Cuomo will certainly fend off all
Democratic primary challengers.
The question will be how badly he is
wounded for November and/or a national
run. Add the corruption trials
linked to his administration coming
up in a few months, and the road Cuomo
needs to travel in 2018 is wrought
with many potholes.
The governor in his eighth State
of the State went the farthest he
has ever ventured to take up a
progressive national mantel at
the expense of New Yorkers.
