40 FEBRUARY 3 - FEBRUARY 9, 2017 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP Bee Baa Karaoke brings classic hits to Bay Ridge Jewish Center BY PATRICK WEINBERG [email protected] Some of music’s biggest legends hit the stage in Bay Ridge on January 21, well, sort of. Bee Baa Karaoke, owned by Barbara Perkins and Omar Aviles, hosted a dance party at the Bay Ridge Jewish Center with performances by Louis Carpino as the “King of Rock & Roll” Elvis Presley, Mitchell Augustover as Brooklyn-native Neil Diamond and Perkins and Aviles as Sonny and Cher. The night also featured a DJ, cash bar and refreshments. Ruth Masyr, the Jewish Center president, told this paper, “The place was full with people from the community and beyond.” She said that members of the audience were encouraged to take part in karaoke and sing their favorite tunes, along with interacting with the performers. Masyr attributed this to the great facilities at the center. “We have a wonderful stage and some amazingly talented people," she said. "People who love to sing just lined up and loved the opportunity because we have a stage for them.” Even though securing the performers may have been a little costly, the great turnout made up for it, and Masyr considers the night a success, and would love to hold it again. “All in all it was a fun night, relaxed, singing, dancing. It is a great way to spend a Saturday night in the neighborhood,” Dime Community Bank welcomes Stuart Lubow Dime Community Bank concluded Masyr. Another Dem throws hat into Ridge/ Bensonhurst Council race ring BY HELEN KLEIN [email protected] Democratic District Leader Nancy Tong, the first Asian-American elected official in Brooklyn, has decided to run to succeed City Councilmember Vincent Gentile, who is term-limited. The race was already heating up, with one Democrat, Justin Brannan (a former aide to Gentile) and one Republican, Bob Capano (who currently works for John Catsimatidis managing a Manhattan Gristede’s), having set up campaign accounts. Other Democrats reportedly eyeing a run are Democratic District Leader Kevin Peter Carroll (an aide to Councilmember Steve Levin), Assemblymember Peter Abbate and the Reverend Khader El-Yateem, the spiritual leader of the Salam Arabic Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge. Other Republicans reportedly in the mix include John Quaglione, a long-time aide to State Senator Marty Golden, and Liam McCabe, an aide to Congressmember Dan Donovan, who will be making an announcement on Thursday, February 2 regarding the race. Tong – the female district leader in the 47th A.D. in Bensonhurst and Gravesend, who took office in 2014 and who is supported by the 47th A.D. Assemblymember, Bill Colton – said she had decided to run is to “bring more diversity into the City Council,” citing “a lack of women in politics,” and to expand her ability to help area residents. When she took office, she said, “I truly enjoy helping people. It gives me great joy when I am able to help someone and make their life a little better or easier." has named Stuart Lubow, former chairperson and CEO of Community National Bank in Great Neck, its new senior executive vice president and head of business banking. The addition of Lubow to Dime’s management team comes on the heels of Dime’s recently announced plans to diversify its balance sheet. Lubow’s roots in New York’s banking market date back to 1979, when he was hired as an assistant treasurer at Chase Manhattan Bank after which he went on to lead Community National Bank. Lubow will be joined by another Community National alumnus, Conrad Gunther, who was named executive vice president of business banking.
