Pellentesque sem metus,
Mr. Trump. He has trumpeted that
there is conspiracy against him in
Washington, D.C. and that the Justice
Department and FBI are in on it until
his hair has turned orange. He claimed
a top secret memo would reveal that
his accusations were true.
Instead of working on immigration
or infrastructure, Trump and his
apparatchiks orchestrated a social
media campaign over #ReleaseThe-
Memo in order to distract, demonize
and eventually discredit any findings
from the Mueller probe. Why? Mr.
Trump states that he would “love”
to answer questions to Mr. Mueller
under oath but knows in his heart
that he cannot and is attempting to
derail the Mueller investigation into
his election campaign and its alleged
collusion with Russia.
“Democrats are lucky Republicans

like they do the memo would be all

“Mayor de Blasio has ful lled an incredible
it’s time we stoop to their level, #ReleaseTheMemo,”
Mr. Trump tweeted
after details were leaked.
The "memo" is a top secret document
prepared by and for the Republican
members of the House Intelligence
Committee led by chair Devin Nunes.
It suggests that Carter Page, a former
Trump foreign-policy aide, was “inappropriately”
amount of his promises in a very short
surveilled during the
campaign using a FISA warrant.
The memo, without facts, expresses
an opinion that the Justice Department
and FBI, due to an uncorroborated
alleged pro-Clinton and anti-Trump
sentiment, misused a discredited dossier
on Donald Trump prepared by
intelligence agent Christopher Steele
to get the warrant.
The naked claim that a systematic
WE THE
PEOPLE

abuse of power by the FBI to get the
warrant was perpetrated has no
foundation. Why the hoopla over an
opinion piece drafted by partisan
politicians? For Trump supporters,
innuendo and inference more than
satisfactorily substitute for facts.
This is a win-win for Trump. He
instigates a social media storm over
the memo to distract the public and discredit
the justice system before it gets
to judge him. The memo was released
after sufficient pre-release hysteria and
if completely successful it will used as
justification when Trump fires Mueller.
The GOP will take whatever it can
from its memo and twist it into a dark
story of “deep state” conspiracy. If the
memo is truly a hope to "preserve our
democracy" as claimed, it will have to
inspire some Republicans to retire
before midterm elections truly to
preserve our democracy.
The memo is remarkable in its lack
BY BRIAN KIERAN
of information and its utter absence
of factual corroboration. It is a part
of an ultra-partisan “win-at-all-cost”
campaign to marginalize the Democratic
Party and to sow distrust of all
government in the American people.
Trump is working to pave the way
for more power to be ceded to the office
of the president which will enable him
to satisfy his billionaire supporters
and funders better.
Wake up, America! If a “misleading
set of talking points” drafted by
Trump lapdog Devin Nunes may be
construed without consequence into
an indictment of the justice system,
we are in trouble.
This was not the "bombshell" promised,
but Facebook and Twitter with
the help of hundreds of Russian influenced
accounts will work tirelessly to
convince America it really was one.
After the details of the memo were
first leaked, Mr. Trump said, “A lot of
people should be ashamed of themselves.”
Ironic.

Blasio is really not serious about
following through on his campaign
promises to assure the NYPD scrupulously honors
individual citizens civil rights.
He stated that the “new administration promised
change but instead we get more of the same.”
That is not true. The number of arrests for low-level
marijuana possession
has dropped and NYPD
policy is not to force a
suspect to display small
amounts of pot in order
to make an arrest.
Governor Cuomo has
proposed decriminalizing
possession of 15
grams or less of pot whether hidden or in plain view,
which would take this controversy and its attendant
political baggage off the table. It would be nice to let
police offi cers perform their duties instead of being
pawns in a political chess game.
Mayor de Blasio has fulfi lled an incredible amount
of his promises in a very short time. He has imposed
the extra protection of an inspector general for the
NYPD and signed off on the laws passed by the City
Council which may leave police offi cers subject to
lawsuits for negligent performance of their duties.
He has provided universal pre K without a tax
increase. He is settling the outstanding municipal
worker contracts neglected by Mike Bloomberg for
the next mayor to handle. He is championing Vision
Zero to reduce traffi c fatalities to zero. It is unfair
to question his commitment to his ideals or to the
fulfi llment of his promises.
The City Council will pass 11 laws and four resolutions
to create a Vision Zero environment for our
streets. The new laws provide a lower speed limit for
city streets and enhanced penalties for reckless drivers.
The state legislature must approve the changes.
We also need the state legislature to provide a
reasonable number of speed cameras to enforce the
new laws. Let us hope that our legislators will work
together as a group to see that these changes and
improvements are made quickly.

We are seeing more and more homes in Dyker
Heights enclosed in stainless steel bars on all
fl oors and heavy stainless steel security doors.
I fi nd this trend extremely disturbing. The community
remains as safe as ever. The new protections
seem to appear only on recently purchased
homes and refl ect a different cultural view on
security. Homes like this have existed in great
numbers in the Sunset Park area for many
years and are really not positive additions to
any community.
The homes themselves look horrible and,
worse yet, they make the whole area around
them appear trashy. And, frankly, instead of offering
additional security protection, they more
than likely attract unwanted attention from potential
burglars who fi gure these homes contain
the greatest number of valuables.
Community outreach by civic and government
groups as well as elected offi cials explaining
the disadvantages of the heavy security from
both an aesthetic as well as security perspective
is necessary, or we will be confronted with large
sections of our community looking like safety
deposit box holding cells.

Why the hoopla over an opinion

For Trump supporters,

CONSERVATIVES GATHER
The New York State Conservative
Party chaired by Bay Ridge’s
Mike Long held its annual
political action conference in Albany
last week. The event brings together
Conservative Party leaders, activists
and supporters from around the state.
Those gathered hear presentations
and speeches from an impressive
group of leaders in politics, government
and issue areas over a two-day
period. There is a lunch on Monday
with a keynote speaker and an evening
reception and dinner with Conservative
Party-endorsed members of the
legislature. At the dinner, the party’s
2018 legislative agenda is released.
The Brooklyn party had a large
number of attendees – likely the
largest in the state. Among those who
attended, in addition to myself and my
wife Janet, were Fran Vella-Marrone,
Ross Brady, Paul Balukas, Joe Santangelo,
Eddy Farr, Nanci Roden and
Maureen Daly.
Of course, State Senator Marty Golden
(whom I serve as chief of staff), State
Senator Simcha Felder and Assemblymember
Nicole Malliotakis dropped
by. Nicole was also a presenter with
her talk entitled “Standing Up to the
Regressive Progressive Agenda.”
Fran Vella-Marrone introduced
Nicole. It was noteworthy that Nicole,
as the former Conservative Party candidate
for New York City mayor, was
practically treated as a celebrity. It did
not go unnoticed that she received the
largest Conservative Party vote for
mayor since 1981.
The guest speaker at the luncheon
was Governor George Pataki who was
perfectly at ease with a party that had
supported him in every election since
he was the mayor of Peekskill in the
early 1980s. He spoke mostly about the
important role the party played in his
career and was currently playing in
buttressing against the tide of liberalism
in our state.
Chele Farley, the likely Republican
Conservative candidate for U.S.
Senate, was there for the full two days,
meeting countless folk and speaking. I
introduced her and believe she will be
an impressive nominee.
State Senator John DeFrancisco,
the deputy State Senate leader, and
State Assembly Republican Leader
Brian Kolb made their pitches for the
gubernatorial nomination. And there
was Manny Alicandro, a newcomer
seeking the endorsement for attorney
general who hails from Kensington.
An attorney who holds several
advanced degrees with a specialty
in securities compliance law, I found
him — during a one-on-one interview
as well as when he appeared before
the state party Executive Committee
— to have what it takes to be a strong
candidate.
If he can get the money together to
run the race – and he gave us reason
to believe he can — Alicandro will
get the attention of current Attorney
General Eric Schneiderman.
As I mentioned, the party’s
legislative agenda was released at the
dinner. Some of the highlights are:
*Rejection of congestion pricing
plan;
*A permanent statewide spending
cap that includes New York City;
*Support for allowing wider use of
stop, question and frisk;
*Restoration of the death penalty for
first degree murder;
*Opposition to physician assisted
suicide;
*Support for term limits for all statewide
elected officials;
*Prohibiting any municipality or for
that matter New York State becoming
a sanctuary government.
These are just some of the highlights.
The overall document has several
hundred positions. If you would like to
view the whole agenda, it can be found
on the New York State Conservative
Party website.

I just have one thing to say about
President Trump’s State of the Union
address. It was great!
It was noteworthy that Nicole,
as the former Conservative Party
candidate for New York City mayor,
was very well received and
practically treated as a celebrity.
