FONTBONNE 58 MCCLANCY 56 In a critical contest for playoff seeding,
second place (9-2) McClancy
hosted first place (10-1) Fontbonne
for their last meeting of the regular
season in East Elmhurst.
Addressing the crowd assembled before
the game, McClancy Coach Dewey
Hopkins thanked everyone for the big
turnout and for the opportunity to play
against rival Fontbonne to raise money
for his Hands for Hope Foundation
fundraiser to combat breast cancer.
In his pre-game remarks Coach Hopkins
said, “I have the utmost respect
for the Fontbonne team since they’ve
been our best competition over these
past years.”
Hopkins went on to say, “I can’t
think of a better competitor to play
for this fundraiser tonight and I’d
like to compliment Coach Oliver for
the way his girls play and thank him
for his generous donation.” Along with
Fontbonne’s donation, the game netted
$550 that was matched by McClancy
for a total of $1,100.
With Fontbonne winning (52-49)
its first meeting with McClancy just
a week ago, the Lady Crusaders were
ready to even the score on their home
court. However the Bonnies quickly
dashed those hopes as they ran the
court on McClancy for a 16-4 first
quarter lead.
The Bonnies then extended their
lead in the second quarter as Katie
Marquardt (16 points) and Winter
Charles (12 points) led their teammates
to put Fontbonne up 28-13 at the half.
Trailing Fontbonne 45-29 after an
uncharacteristic third quarter, the
Lady Crusaders led by Grace Broderson
(12 points) made a push to catch
the Bonnies going on a 27-13 run in the
fourth quarter for a “down to the wire”
comeback attempt.
With a minute left in the game,
McClancy’s Brittany Stenz (13 points)
was fouled on a lay-up and made her
subsequent foul shot to come within
one point of Fontbonne, 55-54.
Down to 16.4 seconds, Marquardt
put Fontbonne ahead 58-54 on a
“dribble-drive” and a foul shot, while
McClancy’s Broderson made the score
close at the five-second mark, rebounding
the ball for a basket as time
ran out for the 58-56 Fontbonne win.
In a subsequent 73-49 win over St.
Edmund Prep, the Bonnies closed out
the regular season with a 12-1 record
for first seed in the upcoming 2018
playoffs, while McClancy finished
with a 10-3 record for second seed.
