It was a barrel of both fun and
laughs.
Locals headed to Coney Island
for the annual Boardwalk Barrels
of Fun on Saturday, May 5 at Riegelmann
Boardwalk between West 10th
and West 12th Streets.
The art competition is held annually
on the Boardwalk where
part icipant s
are invited to
paint rubbish
barrels with colorful
landscapes,
seascapes and
carnival-themed
art for the spring
and summer
season.
Hosted by the
New York City
Parks Department and the Alliance
for Coney Island, the event was another
success.
“Boardwalk Barrels of Fun is a
family-friendly way for New Yorkers
to express themselves artistically.
And it serves as
a reminder to
beach-goers to
keep the beaches
and Boardwalk
clean
and litter-free,”
said Brooklyn
Borough Parks
Commissioner
Martin Maher.
Wi n n e r s
were chosen in
several categories,
including, family, students and
open, and received various prizes.
"Brooklyn Barrels of Fun is a great
event,” said Cindy Godla, events, marketing
and public relations manager
for the Alliance. “We had some really
great artists this year and their art
will really help liven up the Boardwalk
this summer. It's a great event
whether you’re an adult or with your
family because it really lets everyone
just be creative and express
themselves.”
In addition, said
Godla, “It’s a great
way to bring the community
together in a
positive way. You get
to spend time outdoors
with your friends and
family and it really
lets people just be
themselves and paint
whatever is inspiring
them. I saw a lot of
aquatic themes but what stood out to
me was the different national flags
and one in particular of children of
different nationalities holding hands.
I thought it was great to see such
positivity. I'm excited that it’s going
to be displayed on the Boardwalk all
summer.”
