MAY 13 - MAY 19, 2016 • BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP 53 ST. A’S TEAM GOES TO CITI FIELD BY ROBERT CAVALIERE When the umpire yelled “Play Ball” for the fi rst time this season, the boys and girls on the St Athanasius Cubs team didn’t know what was in store for them. Joe Orlando, vice president of the league, wrote an essay and submitted it to SNY Play Ball and was awarded a Youth Baseball Clinic with the New York Mets at Citi Field. Players Nelson Figueroa, Wilmer Flores and Logan Verrett, and coaches Dick Scott and Pat Roessler split the St A’s players up and sent them to fi elding, pitching and hitting stations for some one-on-one instructions. The day was awesome with nothing but baseball on the agenda in the majestic arena of Citi Field. A special thanks to coaches Pat Lawler and James Orlando, league directors and Lenny Messina and Phil Mannino, baseball commissioners, for providing a day the players will never forget.
