way most Americans came together in
the hours and days after is a reminder
that in tragedy America often unites
in a manner that displays our strength.
In fact, over 24,000 people attended
the charity baseball game at Nationals
Field that the Republican team was
practicing to play in. This was several
times more than expected and as such
an important statement that America
will not allow itself to be taken down
by a domestic terrorist.
I am not one to blame the media for
the polarization of America into hostile
extremes. You could equally argue
social media as well as the political
officials themselves have contributed.
I do believe the media and certainly
not just the mainstream media has
contributed and on occasion fueled
the flames of hate.
There have been many wake-up
calls over the past few years. I hope
that this terrible incident is the last
one and America begins to turn back
to a civil society.

On any given day, I think both the
Democratic and Republican Congressional
ball teams could beat the Mets.
When the Mets are good they are great,
but when they are bad they are very
bad.
Overall, recently the usually streaky
Mets have been better, but when they
lose, it is usually by extremely lopsided
numbers. In addition, they need more

The Mets could use a whole triage
team, they have so many injuries.
Yet they are only four or five games
under 500. Therefore, I have not yet
begun hoping for next year. Just next
month.

How can we redirect attention to
what is most important, which
is protection and enjoyment of
liberty and working together
to bring the most happiness to
the most people in a responsible
way?
I am not one to blame the media
for the polarization of America
into hostile extremes. You could
equally argue social media as
well as the political officials
themselves have contributed
The state of mind that we should
strive to achieve for ourselves
is more critical to the success of
our republican democracy than any
other “state.”
We must refrain from insults and
complaints about “outrages” and remember
that caring about one another
and helping one another are far more
important than trying to convince other
people that they are wrong about a
political point.
A criminal with no concern for
others opened fire on Republican
lawmakers at baseball practice in a
park in Alexandria, Virginia. The
lawmakers were practicing for a bipartisan
charity baseball game to be
held against a team of Democrats.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise
and four others were wounded in an
act of anger allegedly sparked by
the policies of President Trump. The
shooter was killed in a gun battle with
police. This insanity may have been
fueled by anti-Trump rhetoric but it
was insanity nonetheless.
The shooting has been called a result
of the bitter political rancor which
is dividing America. One pundit called
the shooter “a consumer of far-left
anti-Republican media” as if assassins
should be expected to show up to baseball
practices to express frustration
with bloodshed and violence after
reading political propaganda.
This creature was a weak-willed
coward who could not deal with life
so he chose to concentrate pathologically
on political rhetoric as if that was
more important than anything else.
How can we redirect attention
to what is most important, which is
protection and enjoyment of liberty
and working together to bring the
most happiness to the most people in
a responsible way?
We can and must eschew hate even
when we cannot agree. Republicans
and Democrats line up on both sides
of the debate of whether President
Trump is carrying out his duties
properly but both sides select facts
and sources based on whether they
agree with the source.
Social media compounds this selective
fact-finding and actually creates
the problem of “fake news” since after
something is “reported” on the Internet
with no oversight, it is repeated as
if that adds some kind of legitimacy.
President Trump issues instantaneous
public statements via Twitter which
exacerbates this problem.
He and we should resist being goaded
into emotional reactions because
this does little to move debate over any
issue toward resolution.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller
announced the election probe would
include the possibility of obstruction
of justice by the president. He tweeted:
“You are witnessing the single greatest
WITCH HUNT in American political
history … led by some very bad and
conflicted people!”
Mr. Trump continued, “Despite
the phony WITCH HUNT going on in
America, the economic & jobs numbers
are great. Regulations way down, jobs
and enthusiasm way up!”
He should have merely reminded
the people that he ordered the appointment
of Robert Mueller so that
whispered accusations could be laid to
rest and taken credit for the creation
of over 800,000 jobs since his election.
His emotional reactions do not help
him and merely encourage other people
to do the same.
The United States has lived through
wars, a civil war, assassinations, a civil
rights revolution and political rancor
that once led a vice president (Aaron
Burr) to shoot and kill a bitter political
rival, a former secretary of the treasury,
(Alexander Hamilton) over 200
years ago.
We are not in that place today and
we will not go down that path but we
must be mindful and remind each
other of our “sameness” and that our
strength rests upon our solidarity not
upon our disagreements.

Blasio is really not serious about
following through on his campaign
promises to assure the NYPD scrupulously honors
individual citizens civil rights.
He stated that the “new administration promised
change but instead we get more of the same.”
That is not true. The number of arrests for low-level
marijuana possession
has dropped and NYPD
policy is not to force a
suspect to display small
amounts of pot in order
to make an arrest.
Governor Cuomo has
proposed decriminalizing
possession of 15
grams or less of pot whether hidden or in plain view,
which would take this controversy and its attendant
political baggage off the table. It would be nice to let
police offi cers perform their duties instead of being
pawns in a political chess game.
Mayor de Blasio has fulfi lled an incredible amount
of his promises in a very short time. He has imposed
the extra protection of an inspector general for the
NYPD and signed off on the laws passed by the City
Council which may leave police offi cers subject to
lawsuits for negligent performance of their duties.
He has provided universal pre K without a tax
increase. He is settling the outstanding municipal
worker contracts neglected by Mike Bloomberg for
the next mayor to handle. He is championing Vision
Zero to reduce traffi c fatalities to zero. It is unfair
to question his commitment to his ideals or to the
fulfi llment of his promises.
The City Council will pass 11 laws and four resolutions
to create a Vision Zero environment for our
streets. The new laws provide a lower speed limit for
city streets and enhanced penalties for reckless drivers.
The state legislature must approve the changes.
We also need the state legislature to provide a
reasonable number of speed cameras to enforce the
new laws. Let us hope that our legislators will work
together as a group to see that these changes and
improvements are made quickly.

We are seeing more and more homes in Dyker
Heights enclosed in stainless steel bars on all
fl oors and heavy stainless steel security doors.
I fi nd this trend extremely disturbing. The community
remains as safe as ever. The new protections
seem to appear only on recently purchased
homes and refl ect a different cultural view on
security. Homes like this have existed in great
numbers in the Sunset Park area for many
years and are really not positive additions to
any community.
The homes themselves look horrible and,
worse yet, they make the whole area around
them appear trashy. And, frankly, instead of offering
additional security protection, they more
than likely attract unwanted attention from potential
burglars who fi gure these homes contain
the greatest number of valuables.
Community outreach by civic and government
groups as well as elected offi cials explaining
the disadvantages of the heavy security from
both an aesthetic as well as security perspective
is necessary, or we will be confronted with large
sections of our community looking like safety
deposit box holding cells.
