BY JULIETTE PICCINI TUGANDER
students traveled to the
Dominican Republic in
May as part of the ACIS Young
Women’s Leadership Program.
Ten juniors, accompanied by
Principal Mary Ann Spicijaric
and math teacher Fran Fuerst,
spent seven days participating
in leadership workshops and
service projects.
Fontbonne o ered the opportunity
to all juniors, and
the participants were chosen
through an application process.
The students who took part
in the trip were Caroline
Dolan, Kaylene Ris, Kirsa
Danis, Jailene Gonzalez, Lauren
O'Keefe, Kaylin O'Malley,
Olivia Aneiro, Kristina Zloklikovits,
Lindsay DeBoer and
Sophia Mahaney.
In Sosua, the students
worked with the Dominican
Republic Education and
Mentoring Project (DREAM),
which brings numerous volunteers
from across the globe to
work together to improve the
lives of over 6,000 children
a year, and Health Horizons
International (HHI), an organization
that seeks to provide
quality healthcare to patients
and build local capacity for
improving community health.
In Santo Domingo, the
students participated in a
leadership workshop with
Movimiento de Mujeres
Dominico-Haitianas (MUDHA).
MUDHA’s mission includes
e orts to improve the living
conditions of women and
children.
The students exchanged
ideas with the girls there,
shared lunch and helped them
make necklaces, which are a
source of income. The students
also spent time with a local
family in Santiago.
The trip was a service
learning experience, which
combined community service
with instruction and refl ection.
The students were inspired
to be leaders who work on
upstream community changes.
Their experience reinforced
important life lessons. They
learned not to stereotype people,
not to take what they have
for granted and that education
is a solution to many problems.
