Cyclones aim to improve pitching rotation
BY JIM DOLAN
Although the Cyclones
started the 2017 season
with a sub-par
record over the past three
weeks, Cyclone Manager Edgardo
Alfonzo believes there
is still light at the end of the
tunnel for his team that has
struggled in the win column
to reach at least the .500 mark.
Glimmers of that light have
begun to manifest as the last
place 6-14 Cyclones split a four
game home-and-home series
with the fi rst place 15-4 Staten
Island Yankees.
Shining for more than just
a glimmer, Marty Anderson,
a recently signed pitcher
who was plucked from the
obscurity of the midwest’s
independent Frontier League,
found the spotlight at MCU
Park during his four-inning
relief appearance in Friday’s
4-3 loss to Staten Island.
Although the Cyclones
could not bring home base
runners in scoring position to
go ahead of the Yankees, the
left-handed Anderson held
Staten Island scoreless for
the remainder of the game,
facing 13 batters to strike out
10 while giving up just one hit
and issuing one walk.
“This is a dream come
true to play here,” said the
24-year-old native Georgian
who pitched well enough to
earn a Frontier League All
Star nomination with a record
of 6-2 and a 2.95 ERA. “At
Florence Kentucky, I went
into my manager’s room expecting
to get information to
play in the All Star Game and
instead he told me that the
Mets wanted me!” recalled a
shocked Anderson.
Noting that Anderson’s
command was impressive
and that he was able to
keep the ball down in the
zone, Manager Alfonzo has
inserted Anderson into the
starting rotation with his
fi rst start scheduled for this
Friday against the State College
Spikes when the Cyclones
return from Ohio after a
three-game road trip.
In addition to Anderson,
another southpaw shared
the spotlight last week. On
July 7, the Mets signed their
2017 fi rst round dra pick,
David Peterson out of the
University of Oregon. As a
junior, the 21-year-old Peterson
posted a 11-4 record with
a 2.51 ERA with a remarkable
140 strikeout total along with
just 15 walks over 100 innings
in the PAC-12.
As for him getting on the
mound to help the Cyclones,
the Mets’ plan appears to
be to rest their number one
pick initially due to the high
number of collegiate innings
pitched and to ease Peterson
into games with limited innings
and a pitch count.
Remaining calm and still
hopeful, Manager Alfonzo
stated, “We’ve got a better
team than this,” based on the
time that the fi rst time manager
has spent with most of this
squad since spring training.
Noting at this level that his
fi rst and second year players
are fi nding out that this is “a
hard game to play,” Alfonzo
cited that his players need to
learn to work hard each day
to reach the consistency to be
successful this season and for
their careers.
