Xaverian Sports Report
BY THE XAVERIAN MEDIA CLUB
The Xaverian sports program
had a very busy first week
with most of the fall teams
involved in their first conference
play. Varsity football, girls tennis
and Junior Varsity soccer got off to
a good start, with Varsity soccer and
Frosh football getting hit with their
first loss of the young season.
Girls tennis was off to a strong
start, outplaying St.Edmund (5-0)
and Bishop Kearney (4-1) to give the
team a 2-0 record in the standings.
The team enjoyed outstanding play
from team captains Vanassa Minitti
and Callie O’Brien, with Lindsey
Rodriguez and Thea Oberman also
picking up wins.
Varsity football played a near
perfect game in a dominant win
over Kennedy Catholic High School
of Somers, New York. After losing
the non-league opener to Hackley,
Clippers coach Mike Jioia enjoyed his
league opener at the Aviator Sports
Complex, noting, “We are coming
along. We just have to be patient with
what we are teaching.”
But the team certainly responded
in this game. Roberto Auguste, a
junior, was awesome on the offensive
end, picking up 127 yards on
11 carries, including a 60 yard run.
Quarterback James Resker completed
eight of 10 passes including a TD
pass to Captain Tim McCabe.
Defensively, Isaiah Amazon returned
a forced fumble (Phil Iacona
on the hit) for a touchdown. Tackles
were led by Joe Randazzo (11) and
Ryan Meade (8).
The Junior Varsity girls volleyball
team won its league opener, defeating
St. Francis Prep in straight sets, 25-15
and 25-13. The team benefited from a
terrific game from sophomores Ava
DeMonte, Caotlin Mullen, Kasey Jenkusky,
Noelle Cook and Julia Fabozzi.
We’re looking for good things from
frosh Amelia Walsh and Rory Long
who played well in their first high
school match.
The Junior Varsity boys soccer
team has been playing well, upping
its record to 2-1 with a win over Holy
Cross. The Clippers took an early
lead on a Login Deitchman goal and
after the Crusaders tied it at one,
Maximilan Wassmer and Yianni
Kontogionnis put the game away. It
was a superb game from Julian Singh
on the defensive end.
In a very, very well
played game, the JV B
frosh
Photos courtesy of Xaverian High School
football team came up on the short
end in a 12-0 loss. Quarterback Ryan
Kenny connected on 10 of his 17 attempts
for 140 yards in the passing
game with some fine catches by his
wide receivers. On the defensive end,
John Stravopolis, Joe Abrahamson
and Christian Ramratten combined
for 10 tackles.
Roberto Auguste pounds it in for Xaverian's first score.
Gabriel Buschmann, Michael
Davies and Julien Singh try
to block a free kick in their
3-1 win over Holy Cross.
An excellent open field tackle by a Mount Saint Michael player
on Xaverian's Giancarlo Conte in a frosh contest.
Xaverian’s cheerleading team was out in full force supporting
the varsity football team at the Aviator Sports Complex.
Yianni Kontogionnis slips one past the Holy Cross goalie for
a score, giving the JV squad its second league win.
