Keeping with tradition, the
Dyker Heights Civic Association
– one of the oldest civic
organizations in the borough, established
in 1928 – on Thursday, October
26 commemorated its 89th year at its
annual dinner dance.
This year’s celebration was
held at Sirico’s, 8015 13th
Avenue, and honored
Joseph DeMarco – a
local resident who
wears many hats
of service – and
the Scarpaci family
– owners of the
longstanding Scarpaci
Funeral Home – for
their dedicated service to
the Dyker Heights
community at large.
DeMarco has been
involved in community
and service organizations
in the neighborhood and beyond for
the last three decades, according to
Dyker Civic. He is currently
the lieutenant governor
of the Brooklyn
Division of Kiwanis
International, commander
of the George
Washington-Victor
Allegretti Post of the Sons of the
American Legion and president of
Brooklyn-Staten Island UNICO and
a member of the Joseph B. Cavallaro
Post of the Knights of Columbus.
Through these ventures and others,
DeMarco has organized,
promoted and assisted
with a plethora of
charitable events
in the community,
benefiting
a number of
worthy causes.
The Scarpaci family, according to
Dyker Civic, has always been active
in community and service organizations,
among them Lions International,
the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis
International and Pietro’s Fight – to
name a few.
The funeral home was established
in 1910 by Thomas Scarpaci. Five
generations later, it stands as an
institution in Dyker Heights.
According to Dyker Civic Association
President Fran Vella-Marrone,
the money raised at each year's
dinner dance goes towards funding
some of the organization's activities
and initiatives throughout the following
year, "That way,:" she said, "we
can continue to do things, and we can
continue to fight for the community
and make sure that we continue with
the great quality of life here in Dyker
Heights.”
