20 JANUARY 6 - JANUARY 12, 2017 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP St. Edmund Prep senior nets 1,000 BROOKLYN EDUCATION BY JULIETTE PICCINI TUGANDER St. Edmund Prep senior forward Kelly O'Donnell recently became the 11th basketball player in school history to score 1,000 career points. She reached the milestone with a 19-point performance against St. John's Prep on December 7. O'Donnell plans to attend St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn this fall. Eighteen members of the St. Edmund Prep track team recently participated in a 2.5-mile run sponsored by the New York Road Runners Club at Marine Park. The runners raised enough money to purchase five pairs of Timberland boots. The boots were donated to the Bread and Life Christmas Drive at Resurrection Church in Gerritsen Beach for distribution to homeless children during the holiday season. SEP track coach Jim Cappiello is a long-time parishioner at Resurrection Church. Part of the child development curriculum at Fontbonne Hall Academy requires students to observe the young child in a natural school setting. In November, 50 Fontbonne seniors traveled to the Dillon Center at St. Joseph's College to observe young children in the classroom. The Dillon Child Study Center was one of the first campus laboratory preschools on the East Coast. It continues to serve as a model and demonstration program for students and professionals interested in the field of early childhood education. Observation rooms allow adults to view students through large windows without being noticed. The Fontbonne students had the opportunity to apply child development theories that they have studied to the children they observed participating in classroom activities. * * * The student council at Bishop Kearney High School sponsored a "Kearney for Kaitlyn" fundraiser. The school community dressed up for a day and made a donation to help a freshman who is battling cancer. Photos courtesy of St. Edmund’s Prep Interactive theater at St. Edmund’s Recently, the St. Edmund Prep High School Theater Club presented its very first ever interactive murder mystery performance at a fundraiser entitled "Cookies, Cocktails and Crime." Guests sat at tables to witness a hilarious performance by the SEP players, during which one of the characters met with foul play. The rest of the characters, each a suspect in the murder, subsequently visited the tables of all of the guests, who interviewed the suspects to determine the identity of the killer. The event was a huge success, thanks Italian class visits Eataly! Mrs. Giarracca’s sophomore Italian class from Bishop Kearney High School visited Eataly in Manhattan where they learned about the cultural traditions in cooking an Italian meal. They participated in a cooking demonstration in which they were also able to practice their Italian vocabulary and speaking skills. The students then took part in a workshop where they were given a guided tour of the marketplace. At the conclusion of the tour, each student received a sample of delicious gelato. Eataly collaborates with the Italian American Committee of Education (IACE) to offer these unique educational tours for students. to the tremendous acting skills of the SEP Players, who never broke character throughout their evening of interaction with guests. The cast was led by seniors Kellie Diodato, Juliana Munoz, Mollie O'Brien, Gabriela Siniscalchi and Skylah Fields. Also in the cast were sophomores Brian Jean, Alfred Caccamo and AbbyGail Valcourt. Director of Admissions and SEP Theater alumnus Scott O'Donnell wowed the audience with his surprise appearance as Detective Reginald Harris, and the performance was directed by Ms. Peggy McEvoy.
