FONTBONNE 63 KEARNEY 36 Returning to Brooklyn after a
successful Orlando, Florida
Disney Tournament during the
Christmas break, the Bonnies hosted
the cross-borough rival Kearney
Tigers to open the continuation of
the 2017-2018 BQGCHSAA Division A
season.
Although Fontbonne dominated
Kearney for both of the two games of
last year’s regular season, the Tigers
proved that they were a still a team
with “fight” by nearly eliminating
the Bonnies in a close 46-44 contest
during the semi-finals of last season’s
2017 playoffs.
Similar to last year, the 3-0 Bonnies
resumed the season to play the 2-2
Tigers by jumping out to a hefty 30-10
first half lead over the Tigers on the
dominant play of Fontbonne center
Jill Howard (15 points) who scored on
short range jumpers as well as the
baseline.
In the third quarter, the game’s
high scorer, Kearney’s Casey
O’Shaughnessy (21 points) rallied the
Tigers to score 17 points to cut Fontbonne’s
lead down to 47-27. However,
strong rebounding by Izzy Chirico
(eight points) and Winter Charles (seven
points) provided Fontbonne with
constant ball possession to maintain
a winning margin right up to the end
of the fourth quarter.
When asked about resuming the
season with such a dominating win,
senior co-captain Katie Marquardt
(16 points) stated that she looked at
this game as an opportunity to get to
know and work with the rest of her
new teammates.
“I think from the beginning of the
season that we came on well and we’re
trying to play better as a team,” said
Marquardt.
On the loss, O’Shaughnessy stated,
“We learned that we have to make shots
and play hard from the start. They got
on us early and we just couldn’t make
it back.”
The 63-36 win over 2-3 Kearney
gives Fontbonne a 4-0 record that ties
the Bonnies for first place with the 4-0
McClancy Crusaders from Queens.
