DE BOCK, Mary
Carole, 83, of Bay Ridge
passed away on February
6, 2018 at her home
in Brooklyn. A native
New Yorker, born and
raised in Bay Ridge, she
was a woman of character,
charm and perseverance.
She loved
the arts and sciences
and had a passion for
American history. She
attended St. Patrick’s
Grammar School and
Fort Hamilton High
School and went on to
Hunter College where
she achieved a double
Master of Art History
and Education degree.
She met and later wed
Florent De Bock in
the 1950s and raised
her only son, Mark,
whom she adored. She
travelled the world and
later moved abroad
to Germany for a few
years for Florent’s
career. Mary was quite
the wife, of a financier,
in Europe in those
days. Unlike her European
counterparts,
she was an outspoken
career woman ahead
of the times and could
run circles around the
boys’ club, and she did
this with the utmost
grace and dignity.
When she returned to
the U.S., she became a
New York City special
education teacher in
Fort Greene. She gave
her all to her students
in this impoverished
area, and later went on

and Clarinet in many notable big bands both on the road in his early
days and later on locally for an amazing 70 years (1939-2009). He had
a very long and productive life bringing joy to so many people through
