ST. JOSEPH 46 FONTBONNE 36 It wasn’t the match-up that the first
seeded 12-1 Bonnies expected for
the Girls CHSAA Division A Brooklyn
Queens finals as the third seeded
9-4 upstart St. Joseph Cougars upset
the second seeded 10-3 Lady Crusaders
from McClancy in the semi-finals.
After beating McClancy twice
during the regular season, the
Fontbonne Varsity was relishing the
opportunity of a re-match with last
season’s 2017 champion Lady Crusaders.
However, the tables were turned
on the Bonnies.
After a highly energized St. Joseph
team beat McClancy in the late stages
of their 39-36 semi-final, the Cougars
were now motivated to finish the season
strong against Fontbonne in the
finals.
It was a “nip and tuck” game as Fontbonne
played catch-up late in the second
quarter scoring eight consecutive
points to take a 22-17 edge at the half.
The Cougars then went on a 13-7
run in the third quarter for a 30-29
lead as the St. Joseph defense forced
the Bonnies to turn over the ball for
end-to-end scoring opportunities.
Midway in the fourth quarter,
Fontbonne tied the game 34-34 as
Breanne McDonnell hit a three point
shot which would be the last score
before the Cougars pulled away from
the Bonnies.
St. Joseph’s Raven Pitt then proceeded
to intercept a pass and drove
down court to land in a floater to
make the score 38-35 with 3:08 left
in the game.
Pitt’s score pushed her team to finish
on a 16-7 run that stymied the Fontbonne
offense for St. Joseph to capture
its first ever Division A championship.
After losing in the finals in two
consecutive years after finishing in
first place for the regular season, this
season was still a success for Fontbonne
considering some individual
achievements by the team’s student
athletes.
First, four year Varsity player Katie
Marquardt earned a full basketball
scholarship to Molloy College, the
first such scholarship awarded to a
Fontbonne student. In addition to her
scholarship, Marquardt also topped
off her last home game on senior night
with her 1,000 point, another first for
a Fontbonne player.
Second, McDonnell — Marquardt’s
four-year Varsity backcourt mate —
also had a banner year for Fontbonne
finishing as the team’s second leading
scorer.
Recognized for her shooting talent
and hard play on the court by the
league’s head coaches, McDonnell also
earned this season’s Sportsmanship
Award at the conclusion of the championship
game.
