Mayor Bloomberg continues to push a It is diffi cult to believe that, as the city grows, the population increases and the economy prospers, citizens need fewer hospitals and health service resources. Do we need a Starbucks, chain drug store and bank on every corner but no hospitals? The slim hope is the company that wins the proposal contest will be obligated to provide a large emergency medical facility to compensate for the loss of the full service hospital it will replace. Newly-elected Congressmember Hakeem Jefferies took an opportunity to complain that the NYPD is making too many low-level marijuana arrests in New York City. He hinted that this may be an indication that Mayor de Blasio is really not serious about following through on his campaign promises to assure the NYPD scrupulously honors individual citizens civil rights. He stated that the “new administration promised change but instead we get more of the same.” That is not true. The number of arrests for low-level marijuana possession has dropped and NYPD policy is not to force a suspect to display small amounts of pot in order to make an arrest. Governor Cuomo has proposed decriminalizing possession of 15 grams or less of pot whether hidden or in plain view, which would take this controversy and its attendant political baggage off the table. It would be nice to let police offi cers perform their duties instead of being pawns in a political chess game. Mayor de Blasio has fulfi lled an incredible amount of his promises in a very short time. He has imposed the extra protection of an inspector general for the NYPD and signed off on the laws passed by the City WE THE PEOPLE BY BRIAN KERIN Council which may leave police offi cers subject to lawsuits for negligent performance of their duties. He has provided universal pre K without a tax increase. He is settling the outstanding municipal worker contracts neglected by Mike Bloomberg for the next mayor to handle. He is championing Vision Zero to reduce traffi c fatalities to zero. It is unfair to question his commitment to his ideals or to the fulfi llment of his promises. The City Council will pass 11 laws and four resolutions to create a Vision Zero environment for our streets. The new laws provide a lower speed limit for city streets and enhanced penalties for reckless drivers. The state legislature must approve the changes. We also need the state legislature to provide a reasonable number of speed cameras to enforce the new laws. Let us hope that our legislators will work together as a group to see that these changes and improvements are made quickly. When so much is at stake, it is not the time to make political statements or play games”. The Kings County Memorial Day Parade was simply awesome. The line of march was one of the longest in years with literally thousands of spectators lining Third Avenue enjoying the bands and cheering the marchers. The Gold Star Mothers were the grand marshals. I can hardly think of a more worthy group. These moms who wear the distinctive gold star pin have given to the defense of our nation and protection of our freedoms their sons and daughters. They could not give more. Always honor and respect these moms. Our elected offi - cials including Congressmember Michael Grimm, State Senator Marty Golden, Assemblymembers Nicole Malliotakis and Alec Brook-Krasny as well as Councilmember Vincent Gentile all participated. So did the Kings County Conservative Party and Bay Ridge Democrats. Domenic Recchia had individuals handing out campaign literature as they attempted to sign people up to vote. Considering the overwhelmingly positive reception the Conservative Party received, the liberal Recchia group may have found the wrong parade to conduct a registration drive. Live and learn. *** The Conservative Party’s 31st consecutive POW/MIA ceremony held at Look Out Point at 81st Street and Shore Road was very well attended. The party for the past several years has been joined by the St. Anselm’s Boy Scout troop which boasts one of the largest numbers of Eagle Scouts of any troops in the nation. This year two Eagle Scouts were in attendance. There are 1,642 individuals who remain missing and unaccounted for from the Vietnam War. This is six fewer than last year due to successful efforts in identifying the remains of a handful of individuals that had been located and returned. The process of identifying remains is painstaking and can take many months. The last soldier identifi ed was Captain Douglas Ferguson, USAF, shot down over Laos on December 30, 1969.His remains were recovered on April 13, 2013 and identifi ed on February 14, 2014. *** We are seeing more and more homes in Dyker Heights enclosed in stainless steel bars on all fl oors and heavy stainless steel security doors. I fi nd this trend extremely disturbing. The community remains as safe as ever. The new protections seem to appear only on recently purchased homes and refl ect a different cultural view on security. Homes like this have existed in great numbers in the Sunset Park area for many years and are really not positive additions to any community. The homes themselves look horrible and, worse yet, they make the whole area around them appear trashy. And, frankly, instead of offering additional security protection, they more than likely attract unwanted attention from potential burglars who fi gure these homes contain the greatest number of valuables. Community outreach by civic and government groups as well as elected offi cials explaining the disadvantages of the heavy security from both an aesthetic as well as security perspective is necessary, or we will be confronted with large sections of our community looking like safety deposit box holding cells. The events surrounding the death of Akai Gurley were tragic all around. Former officer Liang clearly made a number of mistakes and is being held accountable. That being said, those who have complained that the conviction should not have been reduced and are demanding jail time are not looking at the facts in this case but rather simply pushing their own anti-police agenda. *** I was very much against efforts to redesign the $10 bill resulting in the removal of Alexander Hamilton. Of course, I thought it was an excellent, long-overdue idea to recognize a leading American woman, but not at the expense of Hamilton who, as one of the architects of the American financial system, should in my view be recognized on currency. In the end, it seems that it was not so much the history as the celebrity resulting from the highly regarded Broadway show depicting Hamilton that saved Hamilton. I guess that in itself says something about the way we as Americans look at things. I do think redesigning the $20 bill with Harriet Tubman replacing a portrait of Andrew Jackson was the way to go. The $20 bill is an important piece of currency circulated in great numbers. Jackson has been on the bill since 1928 and will remain on the bill, but on the back, which reflects continued appreciation for his place in American history. Tubman was an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian and Union spy who for most of her life lived in Auburn, New York, and as is highlighted in her official biography, a Republican. I think in choosing Tubman, the Treasury Department selected an individual that most Americans can agree is deserving of this high recognition. *** A local race to watch is the one in the 10th Congressional District that pits Democrat Jerry Nadler against Republican-Conservative Phil Rosenthal. Rosenthal is a Harvard Law School graduate who holds a PHD in physics from Cal Tech. He has been involved in everything from the Pluto Project in which he consulted to being the co -ounder of FASTCASE, a platform for conducting Internet legal research. Phil Rosenthal is involved in a number of organizations focused on national and international security, and in particular is critical of the Iranian nuclear deal which Jerry Nadler supported. The 10th Congressional District runs from the Upper West Side of Manhattan to Coney Island with all of Borough Park included as well as a sizable parts of Gravesend and Bensonhurst. Borough Park in particular is a community in which the political, civic and religious leadership has been critical of Nadler for his position on Iran as well as many other liberal positions he holds. Although an uphill battle for any Republican, Rosenthal has something to say and I think he is very much worth a listen. Jerry Kassar is the chairperson of the Kings County Conservative Party. He is a longtime community activist who has served as an officer or member of many organizations. He works for the state of New York. Big gulp! The Democratic presidential front-runner, Hillary Clinton, picked up the majority of the 247 New York delegates at stake with her win on Tuesday over Bernie Sanders. Mrs. Clinton now has 1,893 delegates, including super delegates, to the 1,180 committed to Mr. Sanders. The left-of-center Sanders needs 71 percent of all remaining delegates and super delegates to win the nomination. Republicans in New York favored hometown presidential candidate, Donald Trump, despite his confusion about New York history. In a speech, he mistakenly described 9-11 or September 11, 2001 as “7-11.” He said, “I was down there, and I watched our police and our firemen, down on 7-11, down at the World Trade Center, right after it came down, and I saw the greatest people I’ve ever seen in action.” He has promised to hire the greatest” consultants and experts to help him if (Big Gulp) he is elected. He will need all the help he can get. If Mr. Trump is the GOP candidate, he will never be elected president because the people of our nation will not support a candidate so woefully unprepared to assume the responsibility of office and whose message is filled with hate. Bernie Sanders, born in Brooklyn, had overwhelming support from young people and new voters. Thousands attended rallies in New York to hear him speak but, in the end, the chanting and sign-waving were not enough to win over the electorate. It may be that his repeated promises of “political revolution” are not enough to convince the voters who work, provide for families and pay taxes to feel the “Bern.” If he had a plausible plan to end campaign finance abuse, raise taxes without hurting the middle class and redirect current federal funding to pay for his promises, more voters would have supported him. One of the strange realities of this strange primary season is the enmity expressed for Hillary Clinton by the people who are supporting Bernie Sanders. We know Republicans absurdly claim that the former senator from New York is “evil” but even liberal Democrats seem to enjoy disliking her. One right wing commentator claimed that if Hillary Clinton wins, “America will not survive.” However, when the facts are examined dispassionately, no one can contradict the fact that she did an excellent job as a senator in New York. She met New York Republicans and public officials throughout the state and responded to their requests for help in a bipartisan manner. Republican officials disagreed with her ideology, but she gave them her time and attention in a manner that earned their support. Her record will convince reasonable people that she will make a great president. So why is there so much vehement opposition to the most prepared, qualified and electable candidate for president in 2016? The conservatives and right wing media of the nation have successfully demonized her in order to galvanize their anger and frustration about the state of affairs in America. They falsely claim she weakened our military and helped the president make us the laughing stock of the world, yet Bernie Sanders unequivocally declared that the “worst blunder” of American foreign policy was the Iraq War, a war insisted upon by Republican President George Bush and one contrived when his administration orchestrated false information in order to convince Congress to approve the decision. We must remember that all politicians have self-interest. Bernie Sanders is a professional politician, Ted Cruz accepted his wife’s salary and loans from Goldman Sachs, and there no greater example self-interest or self-promotion than Donald Trump. So why does Hillary get the visceral hostility? Part of the reason is that she is a woman, part of it is that she is the wife of the president who interrupted 20 years of Reagan era politics in America and part of it is because she has been in the public eye for more than four decades. Mrs. Clinton deserves criticism for things she should have done better but she doesn’t deserve this hate. However, she is strong enough to persevere and that is the kind of strength America needs now. It is diffi cult to believe that, as the city grows, the population increases and the economy prospers, citizens need fewer hospitals and health service resources. He has imposed the extra protection of an inspector general for the NYPD and signed off on the laws passed by the City Council which may leave police offi cers subject to lawsuits for negligent performance of their duties.
