28 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP • APRIL 29 - MAY 5, 2016 GettinG a kick out of success AmeriKick Park Slope (APS) has done it again, walking away with 16 first place medals earned at the Philadelphia Martial Arts International Competition, under the direction of Sensei Alex Davydov, 5th Dan Black Belt and his student Sensei Ricky Taylor, 3rd Dan Black Belt. How could that be achieved? Simple: the Senseis at APS are dedicated to their students and the students are dedicated to their Senseis. Hard word and consistent training from everyone from White to Black Belt are the key to success at Amerikick Park Slope. Dylan Levy, one of Amerikick’s Sempais, will be testing for his Black Belt next month. At age 11, Dylan has set a precedent. He is currently APS’s Demo Team captain. When he becomes a Black Belt, he will have to relinquish that honor. The Demo Team walked away with first place. The feeling, according to Dylan, “Was surreal. I had to cry. Stepping down as captain will be okay being that my team took the first place trophy.” Dylan was asked if he knows what legacy means. He was on point with his answer. He is not walking away from his Demo Team, he is walking into a leading role as an Amerikick Black Photo courtesy of AmeriKick Park Slope Belt but he is comforted knowing he is leaving a legacy. Joshua Irizarry started training at the age of four and, now 11, is one of APS Brown Belts. He not only attended Internationals but was part of the winning Demo Team. Though it was his first time at competition, Joshua won first place with his bo staff and second place in his forms. What did Joshua like most? “What I liked most about Internationals was the whole experience. Being part of the demo team and winning first place was amazing,” he said. “Watching my friends compete was a lot of fun. I was not nervous to perform in front of many people.” It goes to show how one’s tenacity can bring success. Samara Landais, another Brown Belt at APS, also started training at the age of four. Now nine years old, Samara took first place in Sparring at Internationals. Her favorite part, “Being able to win at fighting against some of the best.” Samara is also a member of the winning Demo Team. GO TEAM!! Amerikick Park Slope is located at 529 Fifth Avenue. Students from AmeriKick Park Slope earned 16 first place medals at a recent Martial Arts International Competition in Philadelphia. st. ephrem holds father-Daughter Dance BY ROSALEEN DEGREGORIO Daughters gathered together with the special men in their lives at the annual St. Ephrem Father-Daughter Dance on Friday, April 9, in Monsignor Peter Kain hall. This year’s theme was a luau and a few of the dads got into the spirit of the evening by wearing Hawaiian shirts while the girls wore flowery dresses. They were bedecked in colorful leis, which fit in with the beautifully theme-decorated hall. They were treated to dinner and dessert by many moms who helped out in serving the food, selling 50/50 raffles and great raffle prizes for both the girls and the dads. Some of the cool items for the girls were an American Girl doll; a “PINK” 3-piece travel set; an adorable “Emoji” basket, which contained an emoji pillow, an emoji cap, socks, bag and stickers; a Tory Burch wristlet and several other special baskets. The fathers had the opportunity to win a Nikon Coolpix camera and a Coach men’s wallet gift set. Fathers and their princesses were able to pose together for a photo as a special keepsake of the fun night they shared with each other.
