The Fontbonne Varsity Softball
Team finished the regular season
with a 7-3 record, but until all the
games in the Brooklyn-Queens CHSSA
AA Division are completed, a second or
third place finish for the Bonnies won’t
be determined until next week.
Once again this season, rival Molloy
(8-1) beat Fontbonne 7-5 for their second
meeting of the season to knock the
Bonnies out of a first place tie with the
Stanners.
MOLLOY 7 FONTBONNE 5
After the Bonnies gave up two early
runs in an error-filled first inning,
Fontbonne made a comeback in the
third inning to take a 3-2 lead on Anna
Bolino’s two-RBI triple and Sydney
LaCognata’s RBI single.
After Bolino held Molloy scoreless
in the third inning, in the fourth inning,
the Stanners’ top college pitching
prospect, Kelsey Carr came to the
plate, where she also displayed her
offensive prowess at the plate.
With two Stanners already on base,
a decision was made to walk Carr intentionally
to set up a force play. However,
the Seton Hall-bound sophomore
had other ideas and managed to stroke
Bolino’s second pitch to center field for
a three-run homer for the go-ahead
score of 5-3.
The Stanners would add two more
runs by the sixth inning to take a 7-3
lead going into the seventh inning.
Fontbonne’s Bolino would only add
one more run for the Bonnies on a RBI
single for the Stanners’ 7-5 win that
would break the Molloy-Fontbonne
tie for first place.
FONTBONNE 9 MARY LOUIS 8
It was an early offensive display as
the Bonnies led the Hilltoppers 9-0
by the fifth inning on the bats of La-
Cognata who went three for four, and
Christina DeAngelis who was two for
two with one sacrifice fly.
Despite Fontbonne’s nine-run lead,
the Hilltoppers mounted a six-run
comeback in the sixth inning to cut
the Bonnies’ lead down to 9-6. The
Hilltoppers would make it a close
game by adding two more runs in the
seventh inning for the eventual 9-8
Fontbonne win.
ST. FRANCIS PREP 6
FONTBONNE 0
After Prep went ahead 1-0 in the first
inning, Fontbonne’s Arianna Heinsch
held the Terriers scoreless up until the
sixth inning. Just as the Bonnies were
ready to get out of the sixth inning
unscathed, a crucial “non-call” opened
the floodgates for the Terriers.
After Heinsch gave up a hot shot
down third for a single with two
out, the next Terrier batter bounced
a grounder to Anna Acevedo who
tagged the Prep runner headed for
second base for what would have been
the third out of the inning.
However, since the umpire could
not confirm that a tag had been made,
the inning continued for the Terriers
to produce five more runs for the 6-0
Prep win.
