hchin@homereporter. A Coney Island will be taking a sabbatical this year in
order to let a new tradition take shape.
After 35 years, the Seaside Summer
Concert Series is not being held this
year, said Executive Director/Producer
Debra Garcia, “in lieu of the
proposed construction of the Coney
Island Amphitheatre down the block
from the West 21st Street site that we
have used for the past three summers.
“We decided that it is best not to
produce the concerts this summer so
that we can put our energy and resources
into planning for the future,
when we have a permanent home,”
Garcia added.
However, she assured residents
and concert series fans that they
need not worry: the concert series
will return. The plan is hopefully to
have a new location ready by summer
of 2015 and “we look forward to returning
to Coney Island, better than
ever,” she said.
In the meantime, the Martin Luther
King Jr. Concert Series at Wingate
Field in East Flatbush is still set
to return in June or July for its 32nd
year with a full slate of free performances.
The MLK Jr. Concert Series
show schedule will be released in
early June at www.brooklynconcerts.

13, added that there are plenty other activities in the area for residents
and visitors to enjoy all summer,
as well.
“Of course, people will miss it this
year and hopefully we’ll have it going
again next year, but we have a new
Thunderbolt roller coaster and everything
else is alive and well,” he noted. The Seaside Summer Concert Series
was held for years at Asser Levy/
Seaside Park, but, following rising
neighborhood opposition, was
moved in 2011 to West 21st Street
and Surf Avenue, in the lot next MCU Ballpark. Recent performers
at the free concerts have included
Cheap Trick, The Go Go’s, and Huey
Lewis and the News.
The series of concerts had been
enthusiastically promoted for years
by former Borough President Marty
Markowitz, who founded the series
when he was a state senator, and now
serves as president of the city’s tourism
office, NYC & Company.
Current Brooklyn Borough President
Eric Adams said during a recent
event at Borough Hall that is looking forward to supporting the
concert series when it returns.

Garcia added.
However, she assured residents
and concert series fans that they
need not worry: the concert series
will return. The plan is hopefully to
have a new location ready by summer
of 2015 and “we look forward to returning
to Coney Island, better than
ever,” she said.
In the meantime, the Martin Luther
King Jr. Concert Series at Wingate
Field in East Flatbush is still set
to return in June or July for its 32nd
year with a full slate of free performances.
The MLK Jr. Concert Series
show schedule will be released in
early June at www.brooklynconcerts.

Chuck Reichenthal, district manager
at the local Community Board
13, added that there are plenty of
other activities in the area for residents
and visitors to enjoy all summer,
as well.
“Of course, people will miss it this
year and hopefully we’ll have it going
again next year, but we have a new
Thunderbolt roller coaster and everything
else is alive and well,” he noted.
The Seaside Summer Concert Series
was held for years at Asser Levy/
Seaside Park, but, following rising
neighborhood opposition, was
moved in 2011 to West 21st Street
and Surf Avenue, in the lot next to
MCU Ballpark. Recent performers
at the free concerts have included
Cheap Trick, The Go Go’s, and Huey
Lewis and the News.
The series of concerts had been
enthusiastically promoted for years
by former Borough President Marty
Markowitz, who founded the series
when he was a state senator, and now
serves as president of the city’s tourism
office, NYC & Company.
Current Brooklyn Borough President
Eric Adams said during a recent
event at Borough Hall that he
is looking forward to supporting the
concert series when it returns.

A Coney Island summer tradition
will be taking a sabbatical order to let a new tradition After 35 years, the Seaside Summer
Concert Series is not being held this
year, said Executive Director/Producer
Debra Garcia, “in lieu of the
proposed construction of the Coney
Island Amphitheatre down the block
from the West 21st Street site that we
have used for the past three summers.
“We decided that it is best not to
produce the concerts this summer so
that we can put our energy and resources
into planning for the future,
when we have a permanent home,”
Garcia added.
However, she assured residents

will return. The plan is hopefully to

commute, including countdown
clocks, Wi-Fi connectivity and
USB ports, as well as an enhanced
station with better lighting, improved
signage and new art,” said
MTA Chairperson Joseph Lhota.
“We look forward to building on
the momentum and feedback
received from these Brooklyn
stations and bringing this innovation
to more stations.”
“I'm pleased to see the Prospect
Avenue R station reopen for the
straphangers of South Slope and
Sunset Park,” added Borough
President Eric Adams. “Greater
investment in our mass transit
infrastructure is critically needed
across our borough to advance
the safety and reliability of
service, and this design enhancement
campaign is a step toward
that larger imperative.”
Similar to the other new
stations, glass barriers have
replaced metal bars, to enhance
sightlines and allow natural light
in the station.
Art is also on display for
straphangers. According to the
MTA, Colombian-born, Brooklyn
based artist Monika Bravo
created for the station pixelated
satellite images presented in mosaic
tesserae, historical maps and
photos of the nearby waterfront,
and forms drawn from modern
abstraction. Data and material are
woven together to create a new
code that connects technology,
process and illusion.
Also featured are wayfinding
floor tiles for the visually-impaired,
new handrails,stair
treads, wall tiles and granite
flooring.
“This is the second station in our
district to be upgraded under the
Enhanced Station Initiative and
we are happy, once again, that
the MTA has completed this
much needed work earlier than
expected and that the station will
be open before the marathon,”
said Community Board 7 District
Manager Jeremy Laufer. “We look
forward to continuing to work
with our MTA to improve our
other facilities and service."
Looking ahead, an amendment
to the MTA Capital Plan that's in
the offing includes funding for
accessibility projects at the 59th
Street, 77th Street, 86th Street and
Bay Ridge-95th Street stations.
