MIDWOOD 20 FORT HAMILTON 6 It was like another homecoming
game for eighth place 5-3 Fort
Hamilton as the fourth place 7-1
Midwood Hornets hosted the Tigers
under the lights last Friday night at
the Aviator Sports Complex.
With a number of recent former Tiger
players now coaching at Midwood,
one Fort Hamilton teacher commented
earlier in the week, “This game will be
like Fort Hamilton North playing Fort
Hamilton South!”
For the last game of the regular season,
the Tigers faced a Midwood team
that over the past five years has gradually
risen to the level of the league’s top
four perennial contenders – Erasmus,
Lincoln, Curtis and Tottenville.
For the beginning of this “North
vs. South” rivalry, both teams held
each other scoreless for almost two
quarters until Midwood quarterback
Michael Pierre Bernard found Dontae
McGriff in the end zone on a 10-yard
pass to give the Hornets an 8-0 lead at
the end of the first half.
Displaying a strong running game
in the third quarter, the Hornets drove
down to the 10-yard line where Tyrese
Weeks smashed into the end zone for a
12-0 lead. After the Tigers got the ball
back on a punt at midfield, Nicholas
Wynter launched one of his signature
sprints for a 51-yard touchdown right
through the middle of the Midwood
line to make the score 12-6.
On the ensuing kickoff, the game
was quickly put out of reach for the
Tigers as David Stephens streaked 85
yards down the sideline to give the
Hornets a two touchdown advantage
late in the third quarter for a score of
20-6.
In the fourth quarter the Tigers
penetrated as far as the Hornet 15-yard
line on a 40-yard pass from Yusef Farraj
to Jahkeel Reef. Despite the Tigers’
late game surge, Midwood’s defense
shut down Fort Hamilton’s last attempt
for a touchdown in a scoreless final
quarter.
With the win, the 8-1 Hornets finish
in fourth place for the regular season
earning Midwood a first round byeweek
for the playoffs, while the 5-4
Tigers will start their post season
next week in the first round of the
PSAL playoffs.
