16 C R Y D E R P O I N T JANUARY OOuutt & A Abboouutt By Jill Davis We survived the holidays once again. Congratulations to us! Now it hits the time of year when the weather is really cold, the days are really short, and you never know if it’s going to snow, sleet, hail or what. Whatever you do, you probably want to stay indoors as much as possible. In the midst of this wintery mix of a mess is a nice day: Compliment Day, observed each year on January 24. It’s a relatively new “holiday,” having been created in 1998 by two ladies from New Hampshire. (Those New Englanders are always so polite.) The idea is to compliment people on this day—ideally, five different people—with a sincere compliment. Yes, that’s the trick; you have to mean what you say. So don’t walk up to a friend and say, “Oh, I just love your outfit!” when you know darn well you wouldn’t be caught dead in it taking your trash to the compactor room. January also marks the Chinese New Year, which in 2017 is on January 28 and is the beginning of the Chinese year 4715. Fyi, this is the Year of the Rooster. The different animal represented in each Chinese year cycles around 12 times, so the last Year of the Rooster was in 2005 (that’s as far as I’m going with the math). People born in the Year of the Rooster are said to be very observant, hardworking and resourceful. I suspect that the ones who live at Cryder Point also have a special affinity for all of the wildfowl around here, but I digress… Happy New Year, everyone, and check out some of these indoor activities in January: Ansel Adams Exhibit: Sight and Feeling Now through March 5, Tuesdays through Sundays, 11am-4:45pm Nassau County Museum of Art One Museum Drive, Roslyn Harbor 516-484-9337 Nassaumuseum.org If you asked Santa for a 2017 Ansel Adams calendar but didn’t get one, check out this exhibit. This collection of Adams’ photographs is on loan from the Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts in Michigan and includes text panels that explain his technique in capturing those gorgeous western American landscapes. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors 62 & above, and $4 for students and children age 4 to12. Broadway Week January 17-February 5/Tickets on sale January 5 Nycgo.com Here’s your chance to grab a few twofers to some of Broadway’s best shows, including The Lion King, On Your Feet!, and others. More shows will be announced as the week gets closer, but we can be pretty sure that Hamilton won’t be among them. (Warning: If you want to catch Jersey Boys, The Color Purple, Falsettos or The Humans, you’d better hurry; they’re all closing by mid-January, before Broadway Week). 16 CRYDER POINT COURIER | JANUARY 2017 | WWW.QUEENSCOURIER.COM NYC Restaurant Week January 23-February 10 Opentable.com Restaurant Week in NYC kind of goes hand-in-hand with Broadway Week, don’t you think? Naturally places all over Manhattan will be participating, but if you prefer to stay local, a handful of restaurants in Queens are joining in, including London Lennies in Forest Hills, MP Taverna and Trattoria L’incontro in Astoria, and nearby Vivaldi in Bayside. The three-course prix fixe dinner will set you back 42 bucks (plus tax, tip and beverages, of course), but it’s still a great deal. Long Island Restaurant Week January 22-29 Longislandrestaurantweek.com Not to be outdone by NYC, Long Island has also hopped on the restaurant week bandwagon. And lucky us, we don’t live far from several cool establishments: LOLA in Great Neck for Mediterranean, Louie’s Oyster Bar & Grille in Pt. Washington for seafood, and Piccola Bussola in Mineola for Italian are just a few of the nearby choices. Better yet, Long Island’s three-course prix fixe is a comparatively modest $27.95—hey, why not dine out twice? BroadwayCon 2017 January 27-29 Jacob Javits Center Broadwaycon.com If Broadway Week wasn’t enough for you, check out BroadwayCon, the annual gathering of fans and fanatics of all things Broadway. This year’s event promises panels, interviews and performances with well-known stars of the Great White Way including Josh Groban, Joel Gray, Chita Rivera and a slew of others. A one day pass is $95 and tickets for the full 3 days are $250 (if that sounds steep, the $600 “Gold Pass” is already sold out. These people are serious!). It’s Swingtime! Dance Classes Coming Up! Beginning Saturday, February 4, 4:15pm and 5:45pm Bayside Jewish Center, 203-05 32nd Avenue, Bayside 718-767-4458 DanceLessonsByLenny.com Cryder Point’s own Lenny Seasonwein starts another round of classes on Saturday, February 4. First up is Swing at 4:15, and for those looking for something a little more “elegant,” the Waltz at 5:45. Remember, these classes are great if you’ve got a wedding or other special event coming up, want to brush up on your twinkle toes, or simply want to go and have fun. Lenny always starts at the beginning, so you don’t have to be Fred or Ginger to enjoy. Each course lasts ten weeks and costs $10 per person for each session. As always, it’s pay-as-you-go…so get going!
