FONTBONNE 77 KEARNEY 73 After coming off a hard-fought
59-56 loss to first place (8-1)
McClancy, the Kearney Tigers
were ready to dole out some payback
to Fontbonne’s Bonnies for their early
season 63-36 loss to Fontbonne.
Besides enjoying a late season surge,
the Tigers had a moment of celebration
last week when their junior point
guard, Casey O’Shaughnessy, reached
her 1,000-point milestone with 38
points in a 67-38 win over Cristo Rey.
O’Shaughnessy would become
Kearney’s ninth Tiger to reach the
1,000-point mark, following in the
footsteps of the great players that
started to reach this milestone during
the 1980s and 1990s.
Coming into the Kearney game,
the Bonnies would be down a player
with senior shooting guard Breanne
McDonnell out to an ankle injury that
she suffered in last week’s 55-43 loss
to St. John’s Prep, Fontbonne’s first
league loss (8-1) of the season.
In a game in which Kearney could
play spoiler by knocking Fontbonne
out of its first place tie with McClancy,
an energized Tiger team led by
O’Shaughnessy ran the court on Fontbonne
to take a 23-19 lead at the half.
In the third quarter at the 3:08 mark,
the Bonnies fought back to trail the
Tigers by just one point (35-34) after
Katie Marquardt hit a long three-point
shot and returned a layup, following
up with a lead pass to teammate Winter
Charles for the score.
However, that close one-point margin
was short-lived as the Tigers, led by Marie
Holstrom (16 points), scored a rapid
15 points to close out the third quarter
50-37 as part of a 27-18 Tiger run.
Led by Fontbonne’s high scorer Jill
Howard (18 points), the Bonnies went
on a 24-11 run of their own to force
overtime with a 61-61 fourth quarter
tie.
Going down to the last minute of
play in overtime, Marquardt slipped
dribbling down court as O’Shaughnessy
grabbed the loose ball and was
fouled immediately at the 0:58 mark.
After O’Shaughnessy made her two
foul shots to put Kearney up 72-68,
Howard’s layup along with Allie Bartholomeo’s
steal and Ryan Carlton’s (10
points) foul shot put Fontbonne ahead
74-72 with 16 seconds left.
The closest that Kearney would
come to Fontbonne for the remainder
of the game would be on O’Shaughnessy’s
next foul shot to make the score
74-73 as the Bonnies finished the game
with a foul shot from Bartholomeo (13
points) and a last second putback by
Charles (15 points) for the 77-73 final
score.
Despite losing, the Tigers played
their most competitive game thus far
this season as O’Shaughnessy again
put on a scoring clinic with 38 points,
matching the total that she accumulated
on the night that she reached her
1,000th point.

Also in pursuit of her 1000th point, with 17 game points
Fontbonne’s senior guard Katie Marquardt (994 career points)
defends against Kearney’s junior guard Casey O’Shaughnessy
(38 game points), who reached the 1,000 point mark a week
prior to the Bonnies’ 77-73 overtime win over the Tigers.
