44 APRIL 21 – APRIL 27, 2017 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP Mixed results for Fontbonne in pair of games BY JIM DOLAN The Fontbonne Varsity So ball Team went from one extreme to the other last week when it lost a tight one-run game to the Molloy Stanners, and then beat the St. Saviour Pandas with a multitude of runs for the Bonnies current league record of 3-3. Molloy 1 Fontbonne 0 Even if it was a tough loss for the visiting Bonnies, the Fontbonne coaching sta still agreed that their 1-0 loss to the Stanners was one of the better games played thus far this season. The game turned out to be a matchup of standout freshman hurlers as Fontbonne’s Arianna Heinsch sent down eight Stanners on strikeouts while only giving up only one hit, two walks and one unearned run. Heinsch’s Molloy counterpart Kelsy Carr was even more stellar on the mound with 16 strikeouts while giving up only two hits, four walks and no runs. By mid-game it was evident that the team that would blink fi rst was going to lose. That “blink” came in the fourth inning for the Bonnies when Abby Fogliano cleanly fi elded a grounder at third base but subsequently hit the Stanners’ Carr running down to fi rst base with a sharply angled throw. That errant throw would score Molloy’s Jessica Hickey, the only Stanner to record a hit (a double) o of Fontbonne’s Heinsch. Fontbonne 17 St. Saviour 1 The Bonnies’ other freshman pitcher, Anna Acevedo, made her league debut in Fontbonne’s second meeting with St. Saviour at Dyker Park. With the o ensive support of her team, Acevedo surrendered only one run to the Pandas while striking out fi ve. The Bonnies scored o en and early as Fogliano’s sacrifi ce fl y scored Alexa Bertelle for the fi rst run of the game. Emily Manti topped o the fi rst inning with a bases-clearing shot into le center fi eld for a grand slam to put Fontbonne up 5-0 at the end of the fi rst inning. Moving to next inning, the Bonnies were still pounding the ball as Sydney LaCognata sent a double to le fi eld to score two runs that would ring up the score to 8-0 by the end of the second inning. The “Mercy Rule” was put into e ect again for the second time this season for the Bonnies’ eventual 17-1 win. JV Xaverian pitcher throws perfect game against St. Edmund Prep BY JAIME DEJESUS JDEJESUSBROOKLYNREPORTER.COM It was a perfect day for a Xaverian High School pitcher. Sophomore and starting pitcher for the school’s JV “A” Team Doug Johnson had it all working on Thursday, April 13 as he threw the fi rst perfect game of his career against St. Edmund. The game, which was played at Gerritsen Beach, with an early start of 9:30 a.m., had less than ideal conditions. “It was real cold,” the 16-year-old Xaverian Clippers pitcher said. “And as we were warming up, I was feeling good that day. Everything I was throwing was good and as I continued to warm up, I felt that it was going to be a good game but I didn’t imagine I would throw a perfect game.” Johnson struck out 12 batters that day, threw 84 pitches in seven innings and retired all 21 batters faced. It wasn’t an easy feat as the starter described St. Edmund as a tough team. “They’re good competition and a solid team and they had a really good lineup that day,” he said. Of course no perfect games are possible without the help of solid defense from a starter’s teammates. This game was no di erent. “I think it was the fourth or fi h inning, one of the batters hit the ball real hard and far and my le - ielder (Kyle Gordon) made a great play,” Johnson said. “He pretty much saved it for me.” Shortstop Aiden Ramos also helped out defensively. Because of the team scoring a whopping eight runs, Johnson had all the run support he needed to win the game. However, he didn’t even know until the late innings that he was knocking on perfection. “I actually wasn’t even aware I was throwing it until the sixth inning when one of my teammates told me that so far no one had even hit the ball,” he said, adding that he didn’t get nervous until the fi nal three batters. “I was still a little relaxed because I felt like it was still my job to go out and pitch and get us the win, but in the last inning I really started getting nervous because I was facing the top of their lineup and their best batters.” His last out was a strikeout as his teammates ran out to the mound, and mobbed and congratulating him. “First thing, I was very proud of myself and happy,” he said of the feat. “It’s a rare occasion when you get to throw a game like that.” Coach William Daly, whose team is 7-1 and in fi rst place in its division, was proud of the accomplishment. "I’ve been coaching 23 years in JV, and this is my fi rst perfect game as far as coaching so it’s not an easy process. You always have your bad hop single or your walk or someone hit by a pitch or a walk. We congratulate him. It’s a job well done,” he said.
