Growing up in Mott Haven, Bridie learned to be tough and marched to the beat of her own drummer and was unapologetic which drove a lot of people crazy, but it often worked in her favor! She worked hard her whole life, having enjoyed careers at General Electric, E.F. Hutton and finally the New York City Police Department from which she retired in 1999. She raised her kids - pretty much on her own, in Brooklyn, NY. Having dropped out of high school to take care of her own ill mother, Bridie was determined to get her high school diploma before her youngest daughter, Tara, graduated from high school, and she succeeded!! Bridie loved animals and brought a lot of them home. She passed that love along to her children – all of whom since have had their own brood of pets as adults. That is probably one of her greatest legacies – her love and care for animals which we inherited. In fact, shortly before mom died, her oldest daughter, Theresa, adopted her cats, Madison and Cleo into her own home, so that mom wouldn’t have the burden of taking care of pets as her health declined. And just before she died, mom asked that the birds that visit her house from time to time be fed with the rice she had left in the refrigerator. Bridie’s daughters, nieces and nephews (and cats) already miss her so very much. We’ll remember her as a “firecracker,” and we hope we have that spark in us, because that’s one of the ways in which we can carry her within our hearts forever. Growing up in Mott Haven, Bridie learned to be tough and marched to the beat of her own drummer and was unapologetic which drove a lot of people crazy, but it often worked in her favor! She worked hard her whole life, having enjoyed careers at General Electric, E.F. Hutton and finally the New York City Police Department from which she retired in 1999. She raised her kids - pretty much on her own, in Brooklyn, NY. Having dropped out of high school to take care of her own ill mother, Bridie was determined to get her high school diploma before her youngest daughter, Tara, graduated from high school, and she succeeded!! Bridie loved animals and brought a lot of them home. She passed that love along to her children – all of whom since have had their own brood of pets as adults. That is probably one of her greatest legacies – her love and care for animals which we inherited. In fact, shortly before mom died, her oldest daughter, Theresa, adopted her cats, Madison and Cleo into her own home, so that mom wouldn’t have the burden of taking care of pets as her health declined. And just before she died, mom asked that the birds that visit her house from time to time be fed with the rice she had left in the refrigerator. Bridie’s daughters, nieces and nephews (and cats) already miss her so very much. We’ll remember her as a “firecracker,” and we hope we have that spark in us, because that’s one of the ways in which we can carry her within our hearts forever.
