58 MAY 12 – MAY 18, 2017 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP Bonnies win big on Senior Day BY JIM DOLAN FONTBONNE 11 MARY LOUIS 1 No matter what your season record is, a team always wants to win on their Senior Day. That’s exactly what the 4-6 Bonnies did after playing a flat game and losing to St. Francis Prep 12-4, just days before their last regular season home against Mary Louis. Unlike the St. Francis game, the energized Bonnies quickly got on the scoreboard in the first inning with two runs as Samantha Marletta singled in Natalie LaCognata, and Alexa Bartelle singled in Liz Tessorio. Carrying a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning with shutout pitching by Anna Acevedo, the Bonnies exploded for nine more runs in the fourth inning. The Bonnies added to their 2-0 lead in a nine-run fourth inning by Alexa Maldonado scoring on a passed ball, followed by a two-run double by Natalie LaCognata to give Fontbonne a 5-0 lead. The rest of the Bonnies’ four runs came on Emily Manti’s RBI single followed by Anna Acevedo’s two-run On May 9 Samantha Marletta, Alexa Maldonado, Natalie LaCognata, Abby Fogliano, Emily Manti, Liz Tessorio and Nicole Fallon (left to right) were honored with floral bouquets on Senior Day 2017 before Fontbonne’s 11-1 win over the Mary Louis Academy. double and Abby Fogliano’s two-run single for the 11-1 Senior Day win. Looking forward to finishing the season at 6-6, the Bonnies ventured to Queens to lose once again to Mary Louis at Cunningham Park by the score of 3-2. Despite Fontbonne’s early 2-0 first inning lead, Mary Louis came back with three runs by the third inning that would stand up for the win to dash the 5-7 Bonnies’ hopes of finishing at .500. “Separation runs, that’s what we need,” said Fontbonne Coach Frank Marinello. “Those are the kind of runs that separate us from the opposition to insure a win.” Working on getting those “separation runs,” the Bonnies will be getting in some extra batting practice this Photo by Jim Dolan weekend as they get set to begin the playoffs. Confident that some extra work at the plate will play dividends in a short playoff series, Coach Marinello is looking forward to playing the always-tough first seeded 12-0 Stanners of Molloy in the second round of the playoffs with an eye on an upset in order to reach the final championship round.
