16 JUNE 16 – JUNE 22, 2017 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP OPEN FOR BUSINESS The New York Times had an interesting front page piece recently about the new positive attitude small and medium size businesses are having towards the Trump administration and emerging federal economic and tax policies. Most Americans are employed by small (under $50 million in annual revenue) and/or medium size businesses ($50 million to $1 billion in annual revenue). Of course, they run the gamut from industrial and manufacturing to service and finance and much more. For them, the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Accord was another sign that the United States was once again open for business. The same can be said of the House’s repeal of Dodd/Frank. The several executive orders reducing regulation and easing the pressures on the energy industry have been well received. And the belief that the Congress and the president will eventually do both tax and health care reform is music to their ears. These companies are hiring once again right here in the United States. And in a number of reported instances, American companies that had moved all but their headquarters to a foreign land – most notably Mexico – are returning. This is not happening in the vast commercial valleys of midtown Manhattan or in Chicago’s business loop but in places like Toledo, Dayton, Rockford, Davenport and Grand Rapids, Rust Belt cities whose residents believed President Trump’s campaign message regarding the economy would benefit them and in turn voted for him. These are places that have liked what they have seen and heard both in actions and stated policy positions since he took the oath of office less than six months ago. As much as government and politics can be about the Senate hearings concerning what the president said or COMMON SENSE did not say, for the workers who are seeing their paychecks become fatter or the families that once again have a breadwinner in their household or the union that has been encouraging people to buy American for decades in hopes of keeping American jobs and are finally seeing it happen, the hearings are more of a distraction from a government that they see working just fine. *** I do look at Facebook off and on each week. And I have a Twitter account too. And as much as it has been accurately reported that they have become cesspools for fake news, I am always surprised by the number of people who, based on the comments, seem to believe the information that is published on fake news sites. Recently, there was a piece that reported WE THE PEOPLE former President Obama as a former president ordered the shooting BY JERRY KASSAR down of a foreign airliner. Amazingly, there were many comments suggesting this was clear proof that he was a murderer and with Hillary Clinton had been engaged in murderous activities during his administration. It was absolutely shocking to me that so many people could have outright bought into something far crazier than anything the National Enquirer would have thought to publish. This was one of the more outrageous things among the posts that I see two or three times a week. I don’t understand how “news sites” that do not exist, which make up stories for the purpose of gathering clicks or simply looking to distort, receive a serious look from people who should know better. Sometimes I think to myself, What do they tell their children? I would suggest that all Facebook and Twitter users take a moment to think about what seems like a really odd story before they buy into it with a like or comment. BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP • JUNE 5 - JUNE 11, 2014 WE THE PEOPLE BY BRIAN KERIN WE THE PEOPLE BY BRIAN KERIN It is time for good people of all faiths to abide by a golden rule: do no harm to others and allow no harm to come to others. It was absolutely shocking to me that so many people could have outright bought into something far crazier than anything the National Enquirer would have thought to publish. OREGON HEROES ARE AN INSPIRATION TO ALL After 20 plus years of honorable sit amet, consectetur adipiscing urna in sem ornare blandit velit, volutpat nec vehicula neque. Aliquam semper euismod service in the U.S. Army, Ricky John Best gave his life defending Pellentesque sem metus, two fellow Americans against condimentum nec, laoreet at dolor. Sed a white supremacist on a train in Oregon. Best was a Catholic who together with two other modern-day Good Samaritans protected two young girls, one wearing a hijab, when they were being terrorized by a 35-yearold consectetur ac, suscipit quis convicted felon who screamed anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant threats at them. The trio protected the innocent girls and the fiend killed Best and Taliesin Namkai-Meche, who had recently graduated college, with a knife. The other man was hospitalized with serious injuries. The murderer fled but was apprehended by police with assistance from bystanders who pointed him out. These heroes were killed and injured protecting other Americans. They did the right thing. Their selflessness and heroism are an inspiration to every American. We must value life, protect one another and bring justice to the guilty. The protectors must be honored and the miscreant should receive swift justice and absolutely no recognition. In London, the jihadists responsible for the knife attack that killed seven innocent people were identified. They murdered seven people in a craven and despicable manner before being shot by police. Over 100 Muslim clerics in England announced that there would be no funeral prayers for the terrorists and the religious leaders urged others to join them. Terrorists dishonor the core teachings of Islam. Ecumenical cooperation is needed to defeat hate and evil. It is time for good people of all faiths to abide by a golden rule: do no harm to others and allow no harm to come to others. The good must be recognized and remembered while evil men must be stopped and forgotten. Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito tried to have Oscar Lopez Rivera, a convicted terrorist, honored as a hero at the New York City Puerto Rican Day parade, although he bombed a restaurant in Manhattan and killed four innocent people to “free” Puerto Rico in 1975. Ms. Mark-Viverito’s efforts transformed a joyous cultural celebration into a controversial stage to rationalize radical and violent action. Sponsors and political figures decided not to participate in this parade even after Lopez Rivera belatedly declined to be honored. Ms. Mark-Viverito has also been working on the New York City budget and stuck a $26 million provision in the $85.2 billion budget to fund legal representation for convicted criminals who are also an illegal immigrants when the federal government BY BRIAN KIERAN tries to deport them. Mayor de Blasio wanted to add a restriction to the program so those convicted of crimes like murder, rape and criminal possession of a firearm would be excluded. Although no deportee has a Constitutional right to an attorney in federal immigration proceedings, the city had been providing representation to them since 2013. The Council voted 49-0 to approve the change so deportation lawyers will defend illegal immigrants convicted of the most serious felonies with taxpayer dollars. Either Ms. Mark-Viverito is daring the mayor to issue his first veto or the mayor arranged for this and she agreed to take the heat for him. The solution is crystal clear: VETO the budget and let the City Council summon the nerve to override it. These are not the immigrants that we want in our country and these are not the people who deserve our tax dollars. Hospital situation need of triage College Hospital seems to be destined Victory Memorial Hospital, Peninsula Vincent’s Hospital. proposed plans are short on service to on dollars in the pockets of developers. to believe that, as the city grows, increases prospers, fewer health Do we chain bank on hospitals? the company that wins the proposal be obligated to provide a large facility to compensate for the service hospital it will replace. Congressmember Hakeem Jefferies opportunity to complain that the NYPD low-level marijuana arrests in hinted that this may be an indication Blasio is really not serious about following through on his campaign promises to assure the NYPD scrupulously honors individual citizens civil rights. He stated that the “new administration promised change but instead we get more of the same.” That is not true. The number of arrests for low-level marijuana possession has dropped and NYPD policy is not to force a suspect to display small amounts of pot in order to make an arrest. Governor Cuomo has proposed decriminalizing possession of 15 grams or less of pot whether hidden or in plain view, which would take this controversy and its attendant political baggage off the table. It would be nice to let police offi cers perform their duties instead of being pawns in a political chess game. Mayor de Blasio has fulfi lled an incredible amount of his promises in a very short time. He has imposed the extra protection of an inspector general for the NYPD and signed off on the laws passed by the City Council which may leave police offi cers subject to lawsuits for negligent performance of their duties. He has provided universal pre K without a tax increase. He is settling the outstanding municipal worker contracts neglected by Mike Bloomberg for the next mayor to handle. He is championing Vision Zero to reduce traffi c fatalities to zero. It is unfair to question his commitment to his ideals or to the fulfi llment of his promises. The City Council will pass 11 laws and four resolutions to create a Vision Zero environment for our streets. The new laws provide a lower speed limit for city streets and enhanced penalties for reckless drivers. The state legislature must approve the changes. We also need the state legislature to provide a reasonable number of speed cameras to enforce the new laws. Let us hope that our legislators will work together as a group to see that these changes and improvements are made quickly.
