of the Trump administration. His
campaign success was propelled by
the anger and frustration of many
citizens.
However, his election failed to
satisfy or redirect those immoderate
“feelings Mayor and de has Blasio generated has even
ful lled an incredible
more gridlock in Washington. Mr.
Trump has failed to produce any
success in the areas of education,
environmental protection, fiscal or
foreign policy.
The word moderate as an adjective
is synonymous with balanced, deliberate
amount of his promises in a very short
time.

may be boring but an immoderate
person is unbalanced, extreme and
unrestrained.
We don’t have “bad” leaders. We
have a “bad” model for political
elections that disfavors consensus
or moderation. It is a “bad” model for
good government.
Republican efforts to end
Obamacare in July came to naught
after Senator John McCain cast a "no"
vote on the repeal and replace bill
pushed by Republican Senate Majority
Leader Mitch McConnell.
McCain pointed out that with no
practical replacement language it
made no sense to approve the bill. He
displayed good leadership and would
not support a change merely so his
political party could boast that it made
a change.
Republicans are pushing a new “repeal
and replace” bill drafted by Senators
Lindsey Graham, (R-S.C) and Bill
Cassidy (R-La). House Speaker Ryan
called the Graham-Cassidy proposal,
“our best, last chance to get repeal and
replace.”
Really? Is Congress so incapable that
it can take action only when it is poorly
conceived and rushed along precipitously?
This sounds like demagoguery
masquerading as leadership.
McCain pointed out that the new
proposal has not been examined in
committee hearings. The bill could
become law along with hidden mistakes
and undiscussed problems. He
sensibly said that this is “not the way
to do it.”

The plan regurgitates the idea of
distributing federal funds directly to
states in block grants. The cost-sharing
subsidies the federal government
currently pays to lower the cost of insurance
to high risk and older Americans
gradually would be eliminated.
The proposal includes repeal of the
individual and employer mandates,
and allows states to apply for waivers
to alter what counts as an “essential
health benefit” for the insurance
companies.
Healthy people would continue to
choose to be uninsured until they get
sick or have a catastrophic accident.
Sick people with pre-existing conditions
would pay higher premiums.
The proposal increases deductibles so
that all people would have to pay more.
The bill would also allow insurance
companies to charge senior citizens
five times more than young citizens.
The proposal repeals the taxes that
help pay for the program with no alternative
source of revenue to replace
them.

We don’t have “bad” leaders. We

elections that disfavors consensus

In Baltimore,a vandal defaced a
monument to Francis Scott Key, the
author of the Star-Spangled Banner.
“Racist Anthem” was scrawled all over
the monument. This vile, violent and
cowardly act is also an example of the
extremism that is antithetical to the
American way of life.
We are one people drawn from
many and our support of equal opportunity
for all has built our great
society. We need to step away from
extremism and focus our attention on
the vital task of finding a way to make
our elected leaders actually lead.
We must moderate our political discussions
and actions so that positive
action may be taken in the areas of
education, environmental protection,
fiscal and foreign policy.

Blasio is really not serious about
following through on his campaign
promises to assure the NYPD scrupulously honors
individual citizens civil rights.
He stated that the “new administration promised
change but instead we get more of the same.”
That is not true. The number of arrests for low-level
marijuana possession
has dropped and NYPD
policy is not to force a
suspect to display small
amounts of pot in order
to make an arrest.
Governor Cuomo has
proposed decriminalizing
possession of 15
grams or less of pot whether hidden or in plain view,
which would take this controversy and its attendant
political baggage off the table. It would be nice to let
police offi cers perform their duties instead of being
pawns in a political chess game.
Mayor de Blasio has fulfi lled an incredible amount
of his promises in a very short time. He has imposed
the extra protection of an inspector general for the
NYPD and signed off on the laws passed by the City
Council which may leave police offi cers subject to
lawsuits for negligent performance of their duties.
He has provided universal pre K without a tax
increase. He is settling the outstanding municipal
worker contracts neglected by Mike Bloomberg for
the next mayor to handle. He is championing Vision
Zero to reduce traffi c fatalities to zero. It is unfair
to question his commitment to his ideals or to the
fulfi llment of his promises.
The City Council will pass 11 laws and four resolutions
to create a Vision Zero environment for our
streets. The new laws provide a lower speed limit for
city streets and enhanced penalties for reckless drivers.
The state legislature must approve the changes.
We also need the state legislature to provide a
reasonable number of speed cameras to enforce the
new laws. Let us hope that our legislators will work
together as a group to see that these changes and
improvements are made quickly.

We are seeing more and more homes in Dyker
Heights enclosed in stainless steel bars on all
fl oors and heavy stainless steel security doors.
I fi nd this trend extremely disturbing. The community
remains as safe as ever. The new protections
seem to appear only on recently purchased
homes and refl ect a different cultural view on
security. Homes like this have existed in great
numbers in the Sunset Park area for many
years and are really not positive additions to
any community.
The homes themselves look horrible and,
worse yet, they make the whole area around
them appear trashy. And, frankly, instead of offering
additional security protection, they more
than likely attract unwanted attention from potential
burglars who fi gure these homes contain
the greatest number of valuables.
Community outreach by civic and government
groups as well as elected offi cials explaining
the disadvantages of the heavy security from
both an aesthetic as well as security perspective
is necessary, or we will be confronted with large
sections of our community looking like safety
deposit box holding cells.

Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis’s
campaign for mayor
is in possession of a poll conducted
by Zeplowitz and Associates,
a respected national pollster, which
places her just 13 points behind the
mayor. The poll, which was conducted
around Labor Day, has a four-point
margin of error.
The poll showed that Nicole was
becoming better known with an
increasing favorable view by the
public. The mayor, who was coming
off his monument commission fiasco,
remained generally unpopular, with
only 27 percent indicating they would
absolutely vote to reelect him.
Considering how the Democrats in
South Brooklyn who once proudly flew
the de Blasio flag now rarely mention
him, I think there is ample evidence that
the mayor’s tanking poll numbers have
resonated into our local City Council
races.
Nicole’s strong efforts coupled
with the mayor’s problems also paid
dividends in another very important
way. As of this writing, it appears that
Nicole has raised enough funds to meet
the threshold under the city’s campaign
finance law. This should result in better
than $1.5 million awarded to her campaign,
funds that will go a long way in
her effort to get her message out.

An interesting phenomenon with
social media and blog responses is the
strong desire of many to remain anonymous.
Behind this cover, individuals
will write things that they would never
write if their identity were known.
The worst offenders can be found on
Twitter, with nameless accounts run
by people who enjoy trolling but in all
likelihood would never have the nerve
to confront anyone in person — bullies
without backbone.
Newspapers rarely publish unsigned
letters. Editors correctly feel opinions
carry little value to the public if you are
not able to identify the person offering
the opinion. Only then can you give the
voice context.
I will sometimes on social media ask
offending people to identify themselves.
They never do. At that point, I usually
break off contact, inasmuch as I question
the value of their opinion.
The many forms of social media and
internet communications are becoming
more and more important as a source
of news information for many people.
Not surprisingly, the information is
often inaccurate and sometimes fake.
Fake news is often bolstered by these
anonymous commentators.
Anonymous users should always be
regarded with great suspicion.
