or a corporation.
Mr. Trump proposes tax cuts for
high-income taxpayers, elimination
of the federal estate tax which only affects
Americans with more than $5.49
million in their estates and a reduction
of corporate taxes to 20 percent from
35 percent.
Fox News reported that the
winners will include “high-income
households,” “heirs to large estates”
and “corporations with high tax rates.”
Banks with a high tax burden will
be big winners if corporate rates go
lower. JPMorgan Chase,
Wells Fargo
and Bank of America will enjoy a 20
percent or higher jump in profits if
the corporate tax rate is lowered to
20 percent.
However, Fox News recognized that
the losers will include “taxpayers in
high-tax states” (like California and
New York) since the Trump plan
eliminates state and local tax deductions.
New York taxpayers will lose out
on many write-offs and pay a lot more
in federal income tax.
A report from the non-profit Washington
based Tax Policy Center found
that about 12 percent of taxpayers will
have a tax increase of $1,800 under
the plan. Many upper middle class
taxpayers earning between $150,000
and $300,000 a year will lose when the
itemized deductions for local taxes are
eliminated.
The Tax Policy Center predicts the
Trump tax plan will increase the federal
deficit because it provides $5.99
trillion in tax cuts while reducing federal
revenues by $2.4 trillion over the
next 10 years. There is no provision to

replace the lost tax revenue for the
federal government. This plan is just
a deferred tax bill for all Americans
designed to help wealthy Americans
and corporations.
The Trump plan will hurt the real
estate market in high-tax states like
New York and New Jersey. Repealing
the estate tax will cost the federal
government $269 billion over a decade
according to the Joint Committee on
Taxation even before counting the
cost of increased interest on the national
debt.
Mr. Trump promised tax reform
that would be “a miracle for the middle
class” but his plan only provides
miracles for taxpayers earning over
$730,000 a year who will get about 50
percent of the total benefit from the
tax reduction plan.
The bottom 95 percent of all earners
can expect a tax cut of 0.5 to 1.2 percent
with an increased national debt due to
the lost tax revenue, according to the

Mr. Trump, a real estate mogul and
billionaire, has refused to release
his own tax returns to the public but
promises that his tax reduction plan
will not benefit himself. Nonsense.
A more simple and easy tax reduction
plan would be for Mr. Trump and
the Republicans merely to reach into
the pockets of every working class
American and take whatever they
want and distribute it to deserving
millionaires and billionaires. His
“plan” is a giveaway to the rich and
corporations that will balloon the
federal deficit for all.
Mr. Trump called his plan “a giant,
beautiful, massive ... biggest ever
in our country ... tax cut.” when he
addressed the National Association
of Manufacturers lobby group
in Washington, D.C. He is right ...
it’s the biggest ever tax cut for the
wealthy and corporations in our
country.

promises to assure the NYPD scrupulously honors
individual citizens civil rights.
He stated that the “new administration promised
change but instead we get more of the same.”
That is not true. The number of arrests for low-level
marijuana possession
has dropped and NYPD
policy is not to force a
suspect to display small
amounts of pot in order
to make an arrest.
Governor Cuomo has
proposed decriminalizing
possession of 15
grams or less of pot whether hidden or in plain view,
which would take this controversy and its attendant
political baggage off the table. It would be nice to let
police offi cers perform their duties instead of being
pawns in a political chess game.
Mayor de Blasio has fulfi lled an incredible amount
of his promises in a very short time. He has imposed
the extra protection of an inspector general for the
NYPD and signed off on the laws passed by the City
Council which may leave police offi cers subject to
lawsuits for negligent performance of their duties.
He has provided universal pre K without a tax
increase. He is settling the outstanding municipal
worker contracts neglected by Mike Bloomberg for
the next mayor to handle. He is championing Vision
Zero to reduce traffi c fatalities to zero. It is unfair
to question his commitment to his ideals or to the
fulfi llment of his promises.
The City Council will pass 11 laws and four resolutions
to create a Vision Zero environment for our
streets. The new laws provide a lower speed limit for
city streets and enhanced penalties for reckless drivers.
The state legislature must approve the changes.
We also need the state legislature to provide a
reasonable number of speed cameras to enforce the
new laws. Let us hope that our legislators will work
together as a group to see that these changes and
improvements are made quickly.

problem? He puts up a tax
chart supposedly analyzing
the tax effect of the president’s tax
reduction proposal that is filled with
inaccurate information.
Upper middle earners to low earners
will have significant tax savings
under the president’s plan as a result
of the doubling of the standard deduction
and the expected change in the
brackets. I believe my wife and I will
have somewhere around $5,000-plus
in reduced taxes even after the
elimination of the state and local tax
deduction.
It appears the only group that will
pay more in taxes are super high
earners which represent less than one
percent of the taxpayers in our end of
Brooklyn.
Cuomo ignored the doubling of the
standard deduction and essentially
kept the tax brackets the same while
eliminating the local and state deduction
in his analysis. Not surprisingly,
when you do it that way, all our taxes
go up. But that is not the president’s
plan.
Has Cuomo gone so low that he
would lie to his fellow New Yorkers
to make a few political points that he
cannot sustain? Very possibly.
Last winter, he made every effort
to push the opening of the Second
Avenue subway up by a few months so
he would look like a great manager of
a project that was begun many years
before he was elected.
At the time, the whole thing seemed
a bit odd. At first, the subway would
go in only one direction and it was
plagued with problems on day two.
Now a report by an MTA inspector
general indicates that there were
literally thousands of safety violation
that were ignored to meet Cuomo’s
desired date to cut the ribbon. New
Yorkers’ safety was put at risk for a
political agenda.
This should not be tolerated.

Bo Dietl ran a write-in primary
for the Reform Party nomination
on primary day. Of the 5,500 votes
cast,Dietl received 108 votes. He
spent over $8,000 to achieve this
inglorious outcome. Figure around
$80 per vote.
If I were him, I would fire the great
minds behind this embarrassing
outcome. Eighty dollars per vote is
unheard of unless you are Michael
Bloomberg.
I guess the odd things he has been
saying these past few months have
caught up with him and made him
a non-factor in November. He even
called himself a liberal Democrat a
few weeks ago while professing a few
months ago to a desire to be the Republican
candidate. Oh no, Bo!
People who actually vote rarely like
to waste that vote.

I cannot understand how there
could even have been a discussion
about renewing Terry Collins’ contract
with the Mets. He had some great
years, but they are in the past. The
nightmare of the 2017 season does not
all rest on his shoulders, but it is clear
to me it is time for a lot of changes.
If you could trade ownership, I
would be all for it. The Mets have
owners who simply do not know how
to keep the ship afloat. The next best
thing is to find a new manager.
Terry, thank you for the good times.
