FLUSHING 37 FORT HAMILTON 24 It was just three weeks ago that
the Fort Hamilton Tigers beat the
Flushing Red Devils in a close 26-
18 contest in Queens. Now for the first
round of the 2017 PSAL Playoffs, the
eighth seeded 5-4 Tigers were hosting
the ninth seeded 5-4 Red Devils in
a game to meet top seeded Erasmus
in next week’s quarterfinal playoff
round.
Right from the beginning, the Red
Devils jumped out in front. By the
end of the first quarter, the score was
23-0, with Flushing scoring on three
touchdowns and a safety.
In the second quarter Fort Hamilton
bounced back on two Nicholas Wynter
runs (20 and 15 yards) to make the
score 23-16 at the half.
After taking the second half opening
kickoff, the Tigers maintained ball
control for the third quarter to work
their way down to the Red Devils’
five-yard line. After three attempts to
score, the Tigers finally burst into the
end zone to take a 24-23 lead on a fiveyard
pass to Marquis Willoughby and
a two-point conversion pass to Javon
St. John.
However Fort Hamilton’s slim lead
would not stand up long as Flushing
made a dramatic comeback in the
fourth quarter. With the Red Devils
deep in their own territory, the Tiger
defense was penalized for a face mask
and a personal foul.
The two concurrent penalties
advanced the Red Devils 30 yards
across midfield that led to a 15-yard
touchdown run by Praise Prawl to
put Flushing up by the score of 30-24.
With Fort Hamilton just one touchdown
away from tying the game, the
Red Devils stuck their “pitchfork”
into the Tigers to end their season
when the Flushing defense forced a
Fort Hamilton fumble on the ensuing
kickoff.
Capitalizing on the fumble recovery,
Flushing again called upon Prawl, this
time for a 15-yard pass play to make
the final score 37-24.
Recounting the turning point of the
game that could have set up a punt to
give the ball back to the Tigers, Fort
Hamilton Coach Dan Perez stated, “It
would have been a fourth and 12 for
Flushing, but a face mask penalty and
a personal foul gave them 30 yards
on penalties and they went on to
score. We were only down seven and
I thought we’d get the ball back but we
lost it to a fumble on the next kickoff.”
In closing, Perez said, “It was a
very up and down 5-5 season for us
and the record shows it. Our youth
really showed today. We had to fill a
lot of positions with a lot of new guys
but that’s the way high school football
goes. We’re still excited for our future.”
