However, the retro t was never ideal for baseball as the seating was farther away from the playing eld than other major league parks. An early plan for a new stadium was unveiled in 1998, but the Mets also considered moving to Mitchell Field or Belmont Park in Long Island, Sunnyside Yards in Sunnyside or the West Side Yard in Manhattan. Former mayor Rudy Giuliani approved plans in 2001 for both the Mets and the Yankees to build new stadiums. Five years later, the model of the new ballpark was revealed as part of New York’s bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. Construction began in 2006 next to one of Shea’s parking lots, so there was no need to temporarily relocate the team during the baseball season. The stadium was intentionally designed to evoke an old-time baseball park reminiscent of the old Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, and the front entrance features a rotunda named a er Jackie Robinson. One tradition that remains from Shea at Citi Field is the Home Run Apple— except that the new one is four times bigger than the old one at Shea! New York City may have lost its bid for the 2012 Olympics, but Queens gained a beautiful new baseball park, designed with the game (and its fans) in mind.
