Prior to his election to the Senate, José Peralta served in the New York State Assembly from 2002 to 2010, representing the 39th Assembly District. José Peralta is a member of the New York Senate Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian caucuses, and of the Puerto Rican Hispanic Task Force. Senator José Peralta has lived in Queens for more than 30 years. He is the product of the borough’s public schools, including Queens College, where he graduated in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. At Queens College, José Peralta was the student body president, a position that allowed him to work on issues pertaining to higher education, issues he continues to ght for on the Higher Education Committee. A bill introduced by Senator José Peralta, who represents LeFrak City and its surrounding communities, has been passed by the New York State Senate. e bill will strengthen tra c safety in school zones throughout the area, which is great news for all of the residents. Senator Peralta introduced the bill in an e ort to protect schoolchildren and surrounding communities, holding reckless and negligent motorists who speed responsible for their actions. is is the rst time the bill has moved from the Senate’s Transportation Committee. Under the bill, drivers convicted of two or more speeding violations in school zones during school hours over an 18-month period will have their licenses suspended for sixty days. In 2015, according to New York City’s Department of Transportation, more than one thousand children under the age of 17 were injured in tra c crashes. Nine children were killed, and more than 200 were injured. “Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of injury-related death for children between the ages of 5 and 14,” said Senator Peralta. “ e safety occupancy this summer.
