New polling sites for LeFrak City residents
»BY ROBERT POZARYCKI
For the first time in recent
memory, LeFrak City residents
will not be casting
their ballots in primary and general
elections on the grounds they
call home.
Beginning this year, the city’s
Board of Elections has discontinued
using LeFrak City’s Continental
Room as the official polling site
for the more than 14,000 residents
in the complex’s 20 buildings.
Instead, starting with the Sept.
12 primary, LeFrak City residents
will be served by two different
polling sites, but both of them
are located blocks away from the
grounds. One of the polling sites
is P.S. 13, located at 55-01 94th St.;
the other is the High School for
Arts & Business, located at 105-25
Horace Harding Expwy.
While the P.S. 13 polling site is
right around the corner from the
London and Paris buildings, it’ll
be about a six-block walk for residents
in the Panama and United
States buildings.
The High School for Arts and
Business site is located about five
blocks east of the LeFrak City
grounds. However, it’s about a halfmile
walk for residents living in the
Argentina and Brazil buildings to
their new polling site. The school
is served by the Q88 bus, which
runs along both sides of the Horace
Harding Expressway service road.
The Sept. 12 primary will feature
the Democratic Party contest
between Assemblyman Francisco
Moya and former State Senator Hiram
Monserrate for the right to succeed
outgoing City Councilwoman
Julissa Ferreras-Copeland, who has
represented LeFrak City since 2010
and is not running for re-election.

LeFrak City Library gets a funding boost for educational programs
»BY ANDREINA PEREZ
LeFrak City Library is one of
six branches of the Queens
Borough Public Library to receive
additional funding for various
educational programs.
State Senator Jose Peralta and
Queens Library President Dennis
Walcott recently visited the LeFrak
City Library to announce the combined
$60,000 allocation.
The LeFrak City Library and the
other five branches will receive
funding toward STACKS, a free
after-school program for children
between 6 and 14 years of age, and
various computer workshop programs.
Additional funds will be
used to purchase new books and
DVDs.
Senator Peralta spoke fondly
about the libraries saying that they
are “great places for kids and adults
to study, meet new friends and
spend quality time surrounded by
books and culture.”
Mr. Walcott agreed with the senator,
noting that the six libraries in
Senator Peralta’s district receive a
combined 2 million visits yearly. At
the LeFrak City branch, more than
100,000 visitors walk through the
library doors every year.
The other five branches receiving
funds are the Jackson Heights, East
Elmhurst, Elmhurst and Corona
branches, and the Langston Hughes
Community Library and Cultural
Center, also in Corona.
