LeFrak City kids spell their way to victory
Dozens of young LeFrak City
residents showcased their
spelling skills on Sept. 15
during the “Spellabration Finale” at
the LeFrak City Library.
The competition marked the end
of the eight-week summer spelling
bee program hosted by the Friends of
LeFrak City Library. Spearheaded by
Sylvia Martin, the group’s treasurer,
the program began with just eight
children in July of 2017 and has since
grown to have more than 100 children
take part in 2018.
Martin’s vision was to promote literacy
in the community, she said, and
all of the children who participated
this year were given an award for their
hard work. Her team also includes Aisha
Gomez and Taina M. Pierce, while
Congressional candidate Alexandria
Ocasio-Cortez and Queens Library
President Dennis Walcott came to
show their support for the event as well.
Students from pre-K through sixth
