OCTOBER 2016 • LEFRAK CITY COURIER • WWW.QNS.COM 3 Annual Job Fair a Success! job fairs, many of the job hunters who were interviewed or scheduled follow-up interviews with employers will receive a job offer. We have to remember that every potential job opportunity that surfaced at STATE SENATORJOSÉ PERALTA José Peralta became the first Dominican- American elected to the New York State Senate in March 2010 after winning a special election. He was reelected that same year in a general election. Senator Peralta has since won reelection in the 2012 and 2014 general elections. Senator Peralta represents the 13th State Senate District, covering Jackson Heights, Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, and parts of Woodside and Astoria, the most diverse district in the United States. It is the United Nations of all State senate districts. Prior to his election to the Senate, José Peralta served in the New York State Assembly from 2002 to 2010, representing the 39th Assembly District. He is the Ranking Democrat of the Labor Committee, and also serves as the fair could have ended in a paycheck for our hard-working neighbors. It is my hope that the job fair will continue to help unemployed New Yorkers get a job in order to support their families. a member of the Cities; Consumer Protection; Crime Victims, Crime and Correction; Education; Finance; and Higher Education Committees. José Peralta is a member of the New York Senate Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian caucuses, and of the Puerto Rican Hispanic Task Force. Senator José Peralta has lived in Queens for more than 30 years. He is the product of the borough’s public schools, including Queens College, where he graduated in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. At Queens College, José Peralta was the student body president, a position that allowed him to work on issues pertaining to higher education, issues he continues to fight for on the Higher Education Committee This year, alongside Woodside on the Move and the Queens Center Mall, my office sponsored the Sixth Annual Job Fair in which about 1,000 job-seekers participated. As in the past editions, the event was organized in the food court section of Queens Center Mall. Companies present at the event interviewed at least 550 participants, and many more interviews were scheduled with candidates to be conducted at later dates. Among the 50 companies that took part in this year’s job fair were The Disney Store, Sephora, Coca-Cola Refreshments, Con Edison, Dish Network, Swarovski, Game Stop, Plaza College, Yankee Candle, LaGuardia Community College, Victoria’s Secret and LeFrak City Maintenance Services. I started this job fair back in 2008 as a response to the recession that hit the United States in 2008. The situation looks better. According to statistics published by the New York State Department of Labor, New York City registered an unemployment rate of 5.6 percent in July of 2016, compared to 5.7 percent in July of last year. The same statistics pointed out that the unemployment rate in Queens was 4.9 percent in July of this year. Unemployment for the Borough in July of 2015 was at the same 4.9 percent level. In the borough, as of July of this year, 57,200 people were looking for jobs, compared to 58,600 in July of 2015, according to the New York State Department of Labor. Even though the unemployment rate continues to decline and the economy continues to improve, a lot of families have a very difficult time to make ends meet.
