library happingings INTRODUCING It’s a Wonderful Life – December 21st In this timeless 1946 holiday classic, Jimmy Stewart is George Bailey, a man who is at the end of his rope and wondering what life would have been like if he never existed. Clarence, an angel from Heaven, comes to earth to help George understand the meaning of life and friendship. Director: Frank Capra Writers: Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett Cast: James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Henry Travers “What is remarkable about “It’s a Wonderful Life” is how well it holds up over the years; it’s one of those ageless movies, like “Casablanca” or “The Third Man,” that improves with age… Like great music, they improve with familiarity.” –Roger Ebert Selma – January 11th Watch the amazing true story of the turbulent three-month period in 1965 when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a perilous campaign to gain equal voting rights for African-Americans. The historic march from Selma to Montgomery, reenacted in the film, resulted in President Johnson’s signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant triumphs of the civil rights movement. Director: Ava DuVernay Writer: Paul Webb Cast: David Oyewolo, Carmen Ejogo, Tim Roth “Selma is not a manifesto, a battle cry or a history lesson. It’s a movie: warm, smart, generous and moving in two senses of the word. It will call forth tears of grief, anger, gratitude and hope.” – A.O. Scott, The New York Times Red River –January 25th In this 1947 classic western, John Wayne portrays Tom Dunston, who has spent 14 years building his cattle ranch in Texas with his friend Nadine Groot and young Matt Garth (newcomer Montgomery Clift), then a teenager. Tom started out with just two head of cattle—and now with a herd of 10,000, he is ready to drive it to market. Tom is a tyrannical task master and demands a lot from Nadine and Matt during the 1,000 mile trek to the nearest market in Missouri. Matt, now grown, has a mind of his own and soon butts heads with Tom. As the men on the drive take sides, Matt ends up in charge..and Tom vows to kill him. Directors: Howard Hawks, Arthur Rosson Writers: Borden Chase, Charles Schnee Cast: John Wayne, Montgomery Clift, Joanne Dru “Howard Hawks’ production and direction give a masterful interpretation to a story of the early west and the opening of the Chisholm Trail, over which Texas cattle were moved to Abilene to meet the railroad on its march across the country… Clift brings to the role of Matthew Garth a sympathetic personality that invites audience response.” – Variety MOVIE MONDAYS at the LEFRAK CITY LIBRARY! At 98-30 57th Avenue Corona, NY 11368 Mondays, 5:30pm-7:30pm The Shawshank Redemption – February 8th Based upon Stephen King’s novella, “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption,” this film adaptation opens with successful banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) being sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife and her lover. At first Andy is very isolated and lonely in Shawshank Prison, but he becomes friends with Red (Morgan Freeman), the man who “knows how to get things.” Although Andy manages to build a (relatively) comfortable existence in prison, he continues to hope and dream of a better, normal life. Can Andy ever fulfill his dreams? Director: Frank Darabont Writers: Stephen King (novella); Frank Darabont (screenplay) Cast: Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton “It is hard to fathom that a “prison” movie could be a source of tremendous hope, light and inspiration. Yet, to call Shawshank Redemption a prison movie is to minimize its greatness. It is a brilliant film, a study of humanity in all its wonder AND it happens to take place within the confines of a prison.” – Richard Propes, The Independent Critic 36 WWW.QNS.COM • LEFRAK CITY COURIER • DECEMBER 2015
